621 Olympic Archery Bull
« on: June 15, 2022, 11:40:00 AM »
One of my boys drew this tag. Been along time since I hunted or even went into that area. I know the elk like to stay down low near town mostly but If anyone has any info they’d care to share we’d really appreciate it. Thanks.

an old guy i used to work with was a big time backpacker.. he said he was in the buckhorn wilderness and saw some guys packing an elk out that looked like they were about to pass out and die lol. my 2 cents only thing i have heard tales of many years ago.

If the season is pre-rut, the bulls will likely still be herded away from the cows, likely not in the town herd, but that's not always the case.

Best bet is always to drive all you can drive to locate and glass the town elk, then get up in the foothills from the Dungeness to Smitties and ask everyone you come across.

Friend of mine had that tag years ago and got a real dinger, but it was well up the hill between Sequim bay and Disco bay. Nowhere near the town herd.

Elk are being seen regularly around quilcene this summer. I’ve killed two there on the general side of the highway..

I'd stick with this area. Tough with it being so dry and hot.

Just past lake Leland, going south, take the hill to the left, pass a house there’s a gate. It goes to the power lines and the tarboo death flats. Elk there. On Facebook, join I’ve Heard of quilcene… lots of elk talk there, hint hint

Thanks for all the comments. This is a brutal unit to have fun in for the most part. Elk know where they are safe, and its mostly on private. Son worked his butt off each day and spent a ton of time talking to locals and asking for permission. He did get a few people to say yes but most only owned a few acres and its tough to hunt like that. Luck was on his side and the herd crossed onto a 10 acre piece he had permission to hunt and the land owner actually called him, luckily he was only about 5 minutes away and ended up getting a 5x5. Honestly he won't put in for it again. Good luck to the rest who have this tag.

Dr

One thing is for certain.  Your boys hunt hard, and they learned that from their old man :chuckle:
Happy for your son.    He did his homework, and finished strong

Glad he persevered and got a nice bull.

Funny, I did the same thing when I drew that hunt. Ended up with a 5x5 and had a mostly good hunt, but never put in for it again.
