Sauk Elk Tag
« on: June 16, 2022, 03:09:11 PM »
Hey, curious if anyone here has ever drawn the bull tag for Sauk?  I drew the muzzleloader tag this year.  I don't actually know too much about the unit yet.  I'll be putting in quite a bit of scouting, but was hoping if someone knows much about the unit, they might have some information they would be willing to share.  If I understand correctly, I believe Weyerhauser is no longer involved with any timberland within the unit either, at least they it didn't look like they offer their permit access any longer.

It can be done but those numbers are not high. Your gonna wanna focus more toward the northern part of the unit an get to the woods an go through a couple pairs of boots.  Puck up a cow call an have fun.

Where the majority of the elk are is private property.  You will have to be talking to land owners.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

I've got a buddy with 200 acres in your area ill ask if he's letting people hunt this year. The elk are like his pets.

I know a couple people that have had that tag. As stated, 95% of the elk are on private land around the Skagit River. It is a game of finding access. There are some cool looking heavy horned bulls around there, could be a really fun hunt. Some land owners like and welcome hunters, other land owners don't want you to touch "their" elk.

Thanks for the insight.  I know from asking land owners in the past, it can go either way and respect their decisions one way or the other.  Sounds like onX is going to be a useful tool to figure out some land owner names.

Pretty much all private where the elk will be. This might not come off as advice you want to hear, but if you can't tie up quite a bit of landowner permission (you never know where the elk will be) you might think about getting your points back...

:yeah:
Public land parcels get tribal pressure as well. Not trying to be a downer but being honest.

I'll definitely try knocking on doors and seeing what I can come up with.  I have heard about the tribal pressure as well.

Most the land was purchased from Weyerhaeuser and bought by Hampton and they now lease and sell permits.
