300wsm Berger Load Data
« on: June 16, 2022, 06:50:25 PM »
I’ll be receiving my 300wsm Tikka carbon killer from HCA next week and will begin load development. It’s throated for 215 Berger Hybrids, but haven’t been able to get my hands on any since the build started in November. Will also be suppressed, soon as I’m approved, been 11 months :bash:  It has a 24 inch carbon barrel.

What I’d like to roll with for now is:
4831SC and RL23 set aside for this.
ADG brass
CCI 250’s
205 Berger elite hunters (recommended by HCA over the 200.20x hybrids which I do have a box of also)

Anyone do a work up with this combo? I know there’s a few carbon killer HCAs around here.

I’ll be reaching out to Berger for load data too.

Thanks!

You will have a case full of RL23 for the 205’s.  65-66.5 is where you will find accuracy.  About the same for H4831sc.  25 off for the 205’s.  And about 40 for the 200.20x.  The 200.20x will get you more speed (50 fps or so) than the 205’s.  But if your cut for the 215’s the 205’s would fit better.

Just pick whichever powder and bullet and run it up. "Development" on a quality rifle like that with Bergers will be very short.

Aside from all the positives to handloading Bergers and hunting with them, it sounds like that's what he has.

I believe every bullet has someone with a horror story about it. Each bullet has their pros and cons.  I’ve shot accubonds and loved them. Eld X and loved them. Core Lokts too.  HCA reccomended the 215 hybrids in this build. Since I can’t get them right now I figured I’d stay in the family. I have multiple buddies who swear by them and have had great results. I just started shooting the 156 elite hunters out of my 6.5 prc with great accuracy.

I’m semi new to hand loading, which is why I’m reaching out, so I appreciate the responses!

You don't have to justify your choices to anyone man. Theres always that one guy...

I've burned about 40lb of h4831sc in Mike's wsm barrels. I also had to pop smoke on the 215's and landed on the 200.20x's and they shoot amazing. I'm sure accuracy will come easy with the 205's.

I think the 200.20X has the same profile but with slightly shorter nose, bearing surface, and tail then their 215's.  With the success of the 215's if I couldn't get those a lighter version in their 200.20X would be my next choice.

200.2x’s are pretty hard to find in stock right now as well since Karl started using them :chuckle: Good luck finding some bullets and building a load. Mike’s rifles shoot really well.

Thanks all. I’ve got 300 200.2 and can get more of the 205s

Any debate on the 200.2 hybrid VS the 205 elite hunter? As it pertains to killing an animal? I’ve done all the online research and most opinions seem split.

Karl can attest to this as he has a barrel cut with the same reamer.  But the 200.20x is about 1/4 of the way down the neck.  The 205 has much more bearing surface and will “fit” better for that specific chamber.  Either one will kill just fine and be an accurate bullet.  I have noticed that bullets with more bearing surface tune in easier than long nose, short bearing surface bullets.   I have shot a box of the 205’s when they first came out.  They were accurate without much messing around.  I would give the 205’s a run first.  If you have RL23, I would use that over H4831sc.   With a 24” barrel accuracy should come in 2850-2900

Just for reference, Current 1000 Yd World Record: Norma .300 WSM brass, Alliant Reloder 23 powder, Federal 210M primers, Berger 220gr LR Hybrid bullets at 2800 FPS.  10 shots inside 3” circle.

Awesome looking gun! I just got that exact stock too for a build I'm putting together. Curious if it was bedded and how far it was bedded past the recoil lug? And what torque specs on the action screws are you running?

Does mike do the lug conversion on these builds? I've been tinkering with a Mesa Precision lately on one of my guns, before and after bedding I was hanging out right around 1moa which is considerably worse than the factory stock was doing. I did the superglue method and bedded to the lug but not in front of, after some dremel work on the sides of the lug and cleanup of the lug itself (hindsight I wouldn't use the Mesa lug again, they're not very true and kind of soft) and 50 in/lbs font 45 rear she was back to shooting .3's this morn.

He'll do most anything a guy could want to do to a tikka. Action screw torque is often the culprit to accuracy issues. Pretty easy thing to test too if you have a load with known accuracy. Just take your wrench to the range and plug some groups with different poundages or torque sequence.
