Ocean conditions forecast
« on: June 20, 2022, 11:38:34 AM »
I am looking to fish either Neah Bay or Westport Thursday-Friday.  Trying to get an accurate forecast of conditions.  What app or website does everyone use? I have been using magicseaweed.com but thought I would see what other info is out there.  Magicseaweed.com say 5ft at 8 seconds which is pretty lumpy.

Windy combined with NOAA. Generally somewhere in the middle.
Also ventusky is good for pinpoint stuff...

I don't fish out in the big pond, but Windy is the best I have found.  They have multiple models that are often vastly different in predictions, so you need to know which model happens to line up well with a specific area.  For Puget Sound, I look at ECMWF although there is a new ECMWF+ I need to learn more about.

for fishing in the sound I use windy just for wind, for big water I was looking for swell and wind to get a good idea of what to expect. Neah is a 4-5 hr drive.  so I don't want to make the trip if the water is too nasty.

Windy gives me four swell models, I have no idea how good they are or if there are better options.  I imagine there is buoy data somewhere.

Thursday and Friday look pretty good......for both 10 miles and 60 miles out (Neah Bay and south). I'll try and grab a buoy link.

I use the app windfinder and its usually pretty good.  A little more accurate compared to NOAA, as NOAA is more general area.

Both windy and ventusky have a swell options, primary swell, secondary, and time/interval/distance...

Most all NOAA bouys offshore are off station so live updates are impossible. The west entrance bouy has been off station for a year...
The GH bouy may has been hit and miss.

And .. it's Monday.  So the current forecast will change 8 times between now and Thur..

But .. Windy has been pretty accurate out 3-4 days pretty consistent for the last couple years.

This year seems like the swell forecast on NOAA is only accurate the day before. Got buddies that come up from Oregon, and planning is tough when I gotta tell them to wait. Seven planned trips, and only made it out twice. First time was unpredicted crappy.

Windfinder is pretty accurate usually. Compare what it’s showing now to real time buoy data.
