I feel like I have basically watched you "grow up" on here.   It looks like you have gotten it figured out.   It sounds like a great season.   Thanks for the write up and photos.   Thats a dandy mountain whitetail too.   Well done.

Was an adventurous weekend. Spent Friday and Saturday hunting with a buddy.  I had a guy flake out on me today that I offered to take hunting so had an hour of daylight wasted before I headed out to stash some of my trapping gear and get anchors and lures into the ground. I had to take the long way out to my area  as the roads were slick and one of the shortcut roads is impassable due to snow. Fishtailed my way back home this evening. The entire road system I plan on trapping off of will be snowed shut within a month and I’ll probably start setting snares and footholds up there sometime in Mid December via snow machine.  I don’t plan on finding a winter job with all sorts of training scheduled for my normal job so figured I’d spend a week at a time out there and trap!  May go do a test run this next weekend if I don’t tag along with a buddy on his cow elk hunt.

Put 3 additional cameras out all along the area along game trails and I moved another hoping I’ll get the wolves on camera within the next week. Attached is a picture of a group of 5 wolves on the tail of a few elk. Followed the wolf tracks until they were cutting the elk tracks. I didn’t take great pictures of the tracks today as I was in a rush, but a few of these dogs were huge. A couple of the tracks were longer and wider than the length of a Pepsi can.

I took another scouting trip today as one can’t take the weather and roads for granted this time of year. Access to the areas isn’t shut out quite yet. Saw lots of elk and deer on the open hillsides all day while running around checking my cameras.

I came across fresh wolf tracks on the way up this morning that weren’t there while working Friday so decided to stop in the area and do some calling. Since there were elk tracks in the area, I played like a herd of elk and after about a 5 minute break, started doing an elk in distress call and a couple wolf howls. Boy did I get the pack fired up and it sounded like a school yard at lunchtime recess. Unfortunately I haven’t quite mastered the art of sitting still when wolves come in quietly and looked like I pushed them prematurely while I got up from my stand and walked back to my truck. Glad to have had the closest opportunity of the year so far and can’t wait to trap as soon as I’m laid off!
