I will try and find the link, but we looked up custom, rebuilds, new and the prices ranged from 1,200 to 6,000.  I'm not getting a rebuild IF I do need a tranny, heard too many horror stories.

The thing for me is that transmission at that price sends my red flag radar in to overdrive. At a minimum I would be reading every review I could find. I also always encourage people to buy local if possible. If there is an issue at least there is someone you can look in the eye, not some joker clear across the country that says "no problem, just pull it out and send it back, we'll take a look at it".

Look up how to clean your cooling stack. Maybe the cooler is plugged with bugs and debris and such blocking air flow. It's an issue on anything, but I think I've heard these trucks are more prone to this becoming an issue. Stuff accumulates between the cooler and the radiator and blocks air flow. Trans fluid goes through the radiator part of the radiator as well in that truck.

On a side note, I wonder if that cooling fin spray for home AC units would work on cleaning radiators? Or is there a good spray for automotive use?

Find a old maintenance person and see if they have any coil cleaner laying around. Used in the airhandlers of the buildings. You can cut it down with water and it will knock the crud off the coils.

I hope if it’s as simple as dirty fins on my cooler, the tranny guy cleans it, I can only hope it’s that easy!! 🙏

Done by someone who knows what they’re doing they’re great. But you can’t think of it as a cheap solution. It might be less expensive than a new tranny, but if it done well with quality parts it shouldn’t be cheap.

Very few of the new transmission your looking at are new, new rebuild yes but doubt your getting a new tranny for that cheap nor would I trust one that cheap.

I’ve worked at domestic dealership service departments pretty much my whole adult life. Almost 100% of the time the transmissions that are sold by the manufacturer(ford, Chrysler, GM) are remanufactured. They’re almost never new. Engines are the same.

I had the transmission in my 06 Expedition rebuilt by the trans tech in my shop and I spent almost $1000 just on parts, and that was replacing the parts that were bad along with an overhaul kit and a torque converter. I can’t figure out how you’re buying an entire Allison for $3k.
What’s the warranty on it and who pays labor if it fails? Make sure you read the fine print on that. You’ll have a warranty that covers $50 in labor per hour and you’re working with a shop that’s $150-200/hour.

Does this mean they want some remote trans fluid filter installed in your truck in order for them to honor the warranty?

I have an 05 myself 190k and counting clean cooling stacks don't flush tranny, it's not recommended for an allison. Only a drain and fill. Only use allison filters nothing aftermarket make sure you have the magnet on ext filter and fill tranny with Transynd
