Oregon Raffle Rocky Goat Tag
« on: July 11, 2022, 08:54:31 PM »
I bought 6 tickets and won the statewide raffle tag.  Never even thought about hunting a goat, but bought a few of each raffle so I could think about what it would be like to draw one.  I am so used to losing I didn't even check the draw results.  I had to have two separate friends call me several days after results were posted before I eventually checked.

I've been getting more into goat hunting as I research more and getting in shape.  I went last weekend to scout some areas and see what I am up against.  Should be a good hunt and hope to post a video and pictures.  Not going to hunt until September 24th, even though season starts August 1st and goes until November 30th.

Anybody else hunt goat in Oregon and have good stories?  Think I'll go to the Eagle Caps even though the more popular place seems to be the Elkhorns.

You can't see it but this is the face I make when I'm jealous. Congrats to you, goat is my dream hunt. Looking forward to seeing photos and reading about your hunt.

How did the scouting go?

So awesome! Goats are something special. Enjoy the journey. Lot of pressure on a tag like this but be sure and drink it all up.

Congratulations!
I too won an Oregon raffle (Bighorn) way back in 1999 with 3 big tickets! I'm sure you'll have an amazing hunt.
I hunted my bighorn in the Eagle Caps & it is one of my favorite spots in the NW.
I did see goats while hunting for my ram and would be happy to share. Pm me.

Congrats....that will be an epic adventure.

WAIT FOR THE HAIR TO GROW!!!!

If you can help it, don't shoot a September goat. The horns are cool, but let's face it...they're pretty small and not that exciting. The long hair is the real eye catcher.

I can share what I learned from my goat hunt.  Be prepared gear wise.  Cashe in ahead of time if need be and be prepared for multiple trips on the way out.  Not sure of Oregon regs, but if they push shooting a billy, look for a lone goat.  It is easy to get caught up in glassing the large heards.  These will be nanies and kids. Small groups of half a dozen are sub-mature billys.  The loan goat is a mature billy.

Judging a billy is hard until you have seen a bunch of them.  that is why scouting is key. Even if not in Oregon.  If you know where you are going take a few day hikes in the goat rocks and look at the tons of goats in there. Then you can just see one and know it is a good one.  If you find a goat that you like and can spend a few days in there pattern it.  Mine we would see out on the cliffs mid morning till about 2.  Then he would cross over the ridge to feed and where a retrieval was guaranteed.  2 months later when I went in there I shot him the first after noon as he did the same thing.
Not sure this would apply once real weather sets in in the high country.

If you are back in aways. Take help.  As many that are willing to put in the time.

Keep camp dry!

Sound up! 9 7/8 goat with big bases.

Shoot straight Shoot often
