Bullet Seating depth test at 1000 yards
« on: July 16, 2022, 06:39:54 PM »
Wind was less than 2mph this morning so chance to test some different jumps on a new rifle.   Can’t find the lands on this thing ( uni-throaters and bergers don’t work so well together ? )  Depending on the method you use the lands are anywhere from 3.868 to 4.100 oal.  Trying to get .010 jump.

So I tested 3.015, 3.030, 3.050, 3.070 and 3.100.

3.015 and 3.100 were horrible.  3.030 had least vertical of the other three so will test in .003 movements around that to see where it gets bad.  But when your 3” group at 1016 yards is not your first pick you feel pretty good.

Adjusted turrets after 3.050 group so it woukd have inline with 3.030 group.

338 Lapua Improved.  105.5 gr n570.  300 gr Berger.

Target looks like a shotgun pattern (2 rifles) until start labeling the shots.

Is there a reason why you’re testing in such big increments?

I’ve had no trouble with uni-throater and Berger’s.  I’d be pretty happy with 3” @ 1k

Normally I'd try .015 in, .010 off then go by .003.  But this throat with bore rider type reamer and unithroater I'm not sure where to start.  I can see the lands way out there with a teslong ( 5/8") but with hornady gage or stripped bolt method its touches at less than 3.900.  The Smith was supposed to set it at 3.965 oal to match the sample supplied.  But I can chamber a round up to 4.100 even with just .001 neck tension.   I was tempted not to waste my time on it but figured I've got it I may as well see what happens.  Looks like it might be a shooter.
