ONX issues
« on: July 26, 2022, 09:01:43 AM »
Has anybody had issues with their onX when using the feature where you can turn your phone to see which way you are facing? Mine has been struggling lately where it points in the completely wrong direction. I won't move or do anything to my phone then it spins and points somewhere else. Sometimes its accurate but other times its not even close.

My onx has been an absolute train wreck for about six months.  Won't populate waypoints, tracking freezes, etc. Thought maybe it was my phone but brand new S22 and my new work iPhone both do the same stuff. Wish they would stop adding pointless layers and features and get back to being a reliable mapping app.

I've got basemaps and gohunt maps as well and neither impress me much for reliability.  May end up packing a map and compass to Alaska at this point  :chuckle:

Glad it is not just me. Agreed that it has been the past few months where it has gotten worse and I wish they would just keep it simple.

If I were going to Alaska I'd have waterproof paper map and compass anyways  :chuckle:

I tried it and it always messes with me. I just keep it pointing north and put a compass against it.

I don’t use that feature much but agree that OnX has been a train wreck for me for the last year and a half. Issues with offline maps, waypoints not loading, it not knowing where I am at all, etc. waiting to hear how the gohunt mapping software works. If it’s reliable I’ll drop OnX and my epic subscription and combine into one gohunt membership.

I will do the same but keep my onx simply because my job pays for it. Bummer

so far it's been meh.  I have been using all three on my daily hike and they all disappoint. Even simple stuff like tracking a route. GoHunt shows potential but lots of kinks need worked out before I trust it.

I just did an update on onx, not sure if I should have done that

I also have onx trails and it pisses me off it's not on one platform, so I'm toggling between the two because trails highlights the trails for specific vehicle types

I've seen a ton of praise for Gaia over on rokslide. Never looked into it but I've seen posts where quite a few people are leaving OnX for it...

I switched over to the Basemap app.   I personally like it better than onx

I have the same problem of OnX pointing backward, but I think it uses the phone's own compass so I'm not sure who to blame.

I dropped OnX when GoHunt offered a similar product for no extra charge.  It's equally mediocre but at least I don't have to pay extra.

I agree a guy needs a couple of products, GoHunt and Basemap seem to be a good combo, maybe someday someone will build a great product and you won't need so many different desktop/phone tools.

It's frustrating when they don't have the most basic things sometimes.

OnX has been good for me.  Not really happy with BaseMap but it’s not terrible.

I been having troubles with downloaded maps not appearing until I go online, access the maps, then they finally work when I go back offline  >:(

Waypoints won't click for edits or notes, same with tracks

The app is starting to be unreliable as heck

I’ve never had good luck with it on Prince of Wales island. It sporadically works on the kenai. Offline? Forget about it.  Absolutely worthless on afognak

I've been running offline maps strictly for quite a while now. Issues I have are when I seem to be online and haven't had any issues when I'm offline.
