I have property and hunt in the pan handle of Idaho. The major timber company is Potlatch timber. I have been over there several times this year and have seen hundreds of new signs going up about secondary road usage and closures. I know the forester for the area and gave him a call to see what the deal is. Steve told me Potlatch is cracking down on the 50" restrictions and no motor vehicle roads. They only have a few roads in each area that are legal for quads <50" and the other gated roads are no motorized vehicles. In the past they didn't enforce the restriction but they will be now according to Steve. Potlatch has hired a company to patrol their lands up north until they can hire enough people of their own. When I asked him about the change he told me that Potlatch is partnering with a California development firm, to sell off a lot of their lands that have been logged, and this firm is the one pushing for enforcement of the closures. I have hunted over there for twenty years and I have become disgusted by the number of people riding on closed roads, that I would walk out and hunt in the past, so I am excited that they are going to be cracking down on those people, and hope this helps bring the hunting back to a more enjoyable level. If you hunt on Potlatch lands be careful this year on where you ride. They have very good interactive maps on their web page, that shows open roads. I was even surprised to find out how few roads are open to quads under 50" and only the mainline roads are open to side by sides.
