2022 Bears

Success this evening. Been watching a spot for several months that has about 4 different bears in it and set up a tree stand well before the season to see if I can catch them coming on a worn trail they were frequenting close to the river. Been in the stand several times with no success a few times since the season started. Snuck into the stand this afternoon around 3:30 and had the sound of movement about 30 minutes later in the timber to my left. Hit the mouth call 'Fawn in Distress' wail a few times and a brought in a doe under the stand, then all hell broke loose. Behind me I suddenly heard a loud splash in the swamp area on the river's edge. I could hear something barreling through the swamp and brush. About a minute later this bear popped out from the brush line 30 yards away. I lost my dad last year and he had an old lever action 30-30 that he grew up which he passed down to me. He was always so enamored with bears as in his youth he never saw one where he grew up and hunted. Open sights made for a perfect choice along with have a part of my dad there with me. He dropped in his tracks. He was bigger than I thought when I walked up on him. First time calling one in and I will definitely try it again...he RAN into the clearing! Had some serious help getting him out.- you know who you are...THANK YOU!

Got this little guy saturday

alright story time starting with the rifle !!!

So the rifle is a Winchester model 1895 chambered in 405 win.  Its a miroku made for winchester in the early 2000's I believe.  I'm shooting 300gr hornady spire points.  Before I left on this hunt I was really torn between taking a Winchester model 71 deluxe in 348 win or the 405.  I actually had the 71 in the case and swapped it out at the last minute for the 405. 

When I hunt the area this bear came from I usually just walk logging roads in the morning and evening.  I might take a break and glass clear cuts but not often.  I have too much luck just walking.  The leverguns work really well because the shots are close and sometimes quick.  I like the curvy roads with short straightaways lined with elderberry bushes.  No huckleberries in this area. 

Not much of a story.  Came around a corner and spotted the bear I posted earlier.  Maybe 45 yards. He was checking the wind.  Must have caught my scent.  Put his ears back like they do when they wheel around to leave.  Only had a quick look as he turned away.  I put the bead where his offside shoulder should be jerked the heck out of the trigger.  It surprised me how bad the shot felt.  He rolled forward out of sight into some thick stuff.  I was nervous about the shot placement for second.  He had rolled about 7 yds and was dead right there. The bullet entered behind the last rib on his right side and exited his left armpit missing the shoulder bone.

We got one tag filled this last weekend. Nice boar came into us at 100 yards Sunday evening and she double lunged him. Didn't go more than 10 yards from the log he stood on. We've already had bacon wrapped back straps haha.

We got 4 last year. Usually we get 3 a year. I’m Trying to be more selective this year. We can’t seem to find a bear with any decent amount of fat in them.

A buddy shot a bear a few days ago that had the most fat I have seen on an early fall bear.  The fat across the back and ribs was 1 1/2-2” thick.   It was pretty impressive…..must be eating well.  It was a boar  approx 225.   lbs
