Peelings

Saw these and I'm pretty sure they are peeling from this year.  Opinions?  I found some chocolate and black hairs in the sap.

Um.....thats an elk rub with elk hair in it. When the rub they will also rub there head and neck on there rub .

Yep, Charlie is right on the money, and it is hell trying to get that sap out of their hair when you are mounting them

Cool.  That's why I wanted opinions.   My first instinct was Elk or deer, but given they are in velvet right now coupled with the freshness of the tree damage, I thought it might be the elusive blue mt bear.  I was not aware elk would do that kind of damage to a tree with just their foreheads.  The long black hair in the middle of it also led me to conclude bear.

But I will defer to the more knowledgeable masses on this one.  I am a very new bear hunter.

That is not a fresh rub , probably 5-6 months old or older. And the damage is done by the antlers not there forehead, they will rub there head and neck all over the rub to leave scent.

You will pick up on this stuff up the more and more you look at rubs and peels.  Generally on a Bear Peeled tree you don't see alot of that brown shreded bark.  It will be a pretty defined line from bark to the yellow inner wood.  Also you will more than likely see claw marks and teeth marks in the wood also.  MOst of the time a bear will leave the bark under the peeled tree.

I was out hiking in darrington this weekend and saw a tree that def had the bark taken off by a bear, I also saw lots of bear sign. I will post pics when I have a chance

Great info, very informative.

Notice the color variations in the wood and bark. Typically a fresh one will have white/yellow wood and yellow/orange bark. From there they darken fairly fast.
