Anyone Draw Mt Whittier or Norway Pass?
« on: July 31, 2022, 09:26:25 PM »
After having this tag in 2019 I’ve found it fun to hear how this hunt goes for others. I’d be happy to share what I found while I was in there and would enjoy hearing tales of scouting and the hunt!

Did you put anything in the freezer?
The only man who never makes a mistake, is the man who never does anything!!
The further one goes into the wilderness, the greater the attraction of its lonely freedom.

I had the Muzzleloader Bull tag and I was very happy to shoot this 6x6. I know there are bigger bulls in the unit but not many. He’s the biggest I have seen in there before, during or since my hunt.

That’s an awesome place up there, nice bull you got
Did you have the Whittier tag or Norway pass? I hunted what is now the Norway pass on a Margaret archery bull tag the year before it went general. I took a nice 6 point as well, similar to the one you got but not as big 3rds. I saw probably 40-50 different bulls scouting during the summer and on my hunt and only saw one bull bigger than the one I ended up notching my tag on, big frame on him probably around a 310 type bull. I had me plus 4 guys to help, killed my bull at 10am and got back to our spike camp just before dark. Broke camp first thing the next morning and got back to the truck at noon… thank god for good buddies  :chuckle: I’m glad I had an opportunity to hunt up there I will probably never have the chance to again.

Hey Dark2Dark, great bull, I’ve been scouting the last few weeks as I drew the Whittier archery tag. I wrote you a pm if you check your messages it will give you the rundown of what I’ve seen/done so far. My tag is for archery and I’m looking forward to being the only person in the unit for that week. The country is what I dream about while chasing elk.I  Look forward to hearing more experiences within the area. Thank you for your willingness to share info!

I killed my bull about 9AM. It was just me and one buddy. We got it cut up and hung from the trees and then hiked two miles back to our camp, broke it down and took it six miles down to the boat. The next morning we went four miles back in to the bull (and 2500' of elevation) and took half of it back down and across the lake and back to town (it was too warm at lake level to keep it there). Charged the batteries for the boat over night and went back in the next day for the other half. It was grueling. Although, not my worst pack out since it was on a groomed trail most of the way. You could find some places in there to shoot a bull that would be A LOT of work if it was way off trail.

I had a knee that was bothering me, but fortunately it was really only acting up for one out of the six up or down legs that we took in there during the hunt.

I like going in there once a year since then just to take in the country and see the sights!
