I was just curious what lures seem work the best, what depth of water is the best to find them in, what pound test should be used and do you need to use wire leaders?Thanks

No DON'T do that, I was kidding however when I was on a northern Minnesota Boundary waters canoe trip I seen a mother duck and 3 ducklings cruising along the shore and then there was a great splash and commotion and then there were only 2 ducklings with mama !!!

I got bit by one in Lake Vermillion up there in MN. They hurt.

I use anywheres from 17 -25 pound trilene. I always use a steel leader most muskies will follow and hit from behind, I only use a 6-9 inch leader. I see a lot of people with 24-36 inch leaders way overkill in my opinion.

Water depth any level


i have got them in 2 feet casting and 20 feet trollng. Look for some flats with dropoffs and you will do fine.

I have to disagree with blkbear about lure size.  You can catch them on mongo plugs but dont limit yourself.  I would stick to 4-6 inch stick baits or regular to large size crankbaits.  I cant give you much advice on spinners because I have never fished them that way.  Maybe thats what blkbear was talking about.  I fish for them basically like a bass.  I have had way more hits bass fishing than actually fishing for muskies.  They will hit buzz baits, spinnerbaits, crankbaits and even soft plastics.  I have had a ton of pick ups while burning a senko or lizard back to the boat.  When you get a hit on a moving bait that doesnt hook up, just stop reeling and dont move the bait, just keep your line tight and wait for as long as you can stand it.  If you dont feel a fish, give it a little twitch.  Muskie will hit your bait to kill it before sucking it down.  6 or 9 inch steel leaders are plenty long, just make sure they are black, not silver.  Muskie can see the silver and will try to take its prey by the head and bite the leader right off.  Where are you fishing blkbear?

Wow, beautiful muskie! Love those Tigers! I caught a few small regular muskies in French creek in NW Pennsylvania as a kid. They sure pull!

And my thought process on big baits = big fish. I have caught quite a few muskies on smaller plugs when fishing for bass, but I have never used small lures when I am targeting tigers.

And you are right about the bigger lures catching bigger fish.  Kind of like using those 12 inch long swimbaits for bass.  You can fish all week and only catch one fish but you know damn well it will be a good one.  I just figure that unless I am trying for the next record, I would rather catch a bunch of decent fish than one really heavy one.

I have caught two big skies on Silver this spring. Both were caught on smallish crankbaits. Water temp was still pretty cold at the time, which dedinetly plays into what lure to use. Hope everyone has a great Memorial Weekend!!
