Turkey near chinook pass?
« on: May 18, 2009, 06:58:27 PM »
Hey guys. I will be heading to my cabin on Chinook (near whistling jack) and was wondering if a jaunt off the mountain would put me near any decent turkey hunting. I went out last weekend and after getting alot to call back i am hooked. Any ideas? thanks guys

Rock creek, Little and Big Rattlesnake, Nile, Gold Creek...need more? The birds are few and far between, but there are a few floating around.

Good Luck!

I was driving hwy 410 last June and saw a flock of turkeys ( 6 birds)  scratching in the gravel along the road. It was east of whistlin Jacks by a couple of miles. I also talked to a bow hunter during Sept hunt last year that saw some turkeys up in the hills behind whistlin jacks.  He was surprised to see them as he had not heard of them in that area. By the way I saw the turkeys at first light, they were not even nervous. Mike

Of all those places I mentioned, the Rattlesnake and Little Rattlesnake have the most birds. The next closest place would be in the Wenas...Cascade Park, Manastash, etc.

Can you make that trip yet Red Dawg or is it drifted up still? But ya, I agree. Head from teh top down toward where they release the pheasants on the wenas side. Next bet, Teanaway. That's quite a run from your cabin on the pass, probably like 2 hours. Not sure that counts as a jaunt.
