Small tracking device for your stuff!
« on: August 29, 2022, 12:41:12 PM »
Just ordered these, if you have an Apple phone they work great.  My sister uses one to track my dad, he can get confused at times.  I’m going to put them on all my rigs and trailer, so much getting stolen these days it seems like a must have!

they work pretty well but keep in mind they HAVE to be in proximity to an iOS (apple) device to be able to send location.

I was under the impression that if it wasn’t within proximity to your phone no tracking could be done correct me if I’m wrong

They ping a location to any Apple phone that gets near them. So you put one on your four wheeler and it gets stolen, then you see blips on a map where it is traveling because along the way it goes by someone's apple phone and gets pinged basically. So if it gets hidden in someone's garage and they or their neighbor had an apple phone and they go near it you will see a location for it and know it's in there. That's basically how they work.

If thousands or even hundreds of people have them, how does your ping separate from others ?

I bought eight of those a few weeks ago. A trailer forum I was on was talking about hiding them in fiberglass trailers that were being stolen quit a bit.

Here’s my first hand experience.

I put one on my travel trailer.
One on utility trailer
Wife’s car
My truck
Generator

I hooked them to my wife’s apple phone.
And the generator to my iPad.

We took off with travel trailer truck, generator, leaving the other equipment at home. I live on a quiet street with four houses.

We went to Pearrygn lake awhile than to Bonaparte Lake for five days than back to Pearrygn a s home over hwy20.

There was never a time when the air tags did not show the location of all our stuff. We could see the equipment in our drive way, we could see the truck and Rv at the lakes. As long as there was cell service we could see the stuff. The generator tag was on my iPad which showed it when we had Wi-Fi or hot spot off my wife’s phone.

My experience is they work great as a layer of security.

There are a billion apple products out there talking to these things unless folks disable the function on there phone. It is near impossible to find a place in your every day life that the tag cannot be located.

There is suppose to be a alert show on your device if one of these tags not registered to you is traveling with you. But so far I have not received any alert on my iPad. My wife gets alerts when she leaves any of the item behind. But you can turn it off.

You can hide these tags about any where.

My canvas tents this season will all have tags.

The only feature they don’t have is , family sharing , I wish I could have the tags on all my devices.

But each tag only can be on one device.

Recently I been carrying one in my pocket. I drop my wife off at a store and go park.
When she comes out she can locate me or beep the tag for me to pick her up. Good back up if my flip phone is dead.

The applications for AirTags is really unlimited. You really could put them on anything. The battery is suppose to last a year and is easy to replace.

They do not have a way to attach to things. I been using double face tape and gorilla tape.
For the tents I have some small cloth bags my wife got at the craft store.

What exactly does "proximity" mean?  Is there a distance envelope one can expect?

Just had my truck stolen last week. I wish I had a tracker on it so I could go find the POS and kindly let him know that my truck isn't free for the taking.

Please keep an eye out

Yeah ,phones,iPads, watches all talk to it. If apple. If it bothers you turn off the feature.

From another forum not me.

On your iPhone, open Settings, then tap your name at the top. Then Find My -> Find My iPhone. Turn off "Find My Network".

Your phone will no longer participate in the Find My network. Of course, you won't be able to find your iPhone if you loose it either.

Apple has been pretty transparant about how this works and your phone updating the location of a lost AirTag does not give apple or anyone else the abiltiy to determine your location.

nope, have had mine on my truck now since I received them.  Last night I was in my living room and it notified me I was away from my truck, lol.  And today going to work, I drive a commuter car, it notified me again where my truck was on a map.  I love it so far.  I believe you can turn those notifications off, but no monthly charges.

Right!!  Thats the dilemma, do you just go with a couple good buddies and deal with it yourself, or call the police and find out they won't go and now they know you are on your way to some thieves house! lol

Well there has been lots of discussion over AirTags on Trailers. Over a year ago I purchased four AirTags at Costco.

One of those tags was taped inside the black water vent cap on my 15 B.
On the way to Rally in the Valley in May the cap blew off west of Winthrop Wa on Hwy 20

Over the months the AirTag kept reporting its location laying along the Hwy.
On our return from a near 3000 mile trip around Idaho, West Yellowstone we decided to try to find the cap.

Using my wife’s cell phone we pulled off the Hwy near the reported location.
She pressed find tag and a locator arrow popped on the screen and directed us to the AirTag.
The cap had been run over and was in pieces, the center with the tag still attached was in the grass along the Hwy.

In over a year all the AirTags have reported their location without fail. We had another tag on the trailer, one on generator and our small dog. Through out our trip the AirTag s reported where they were through three states without fail.

So if you are looking for cheap tracking of your items. Look at AirTags.
And yes they do report there presence at some point.  But it took 3 months.

Here’s the missing cap , what’s left with tag taped in center.

Use a cam that takes 16 batteries. Put batteries on one side and air tag on the other.

Yes they do. We have them on all of our smaller equipment (mini excavators, skid steers, rollers, plate compactors, jumping jacks, etc.) and I have successfully used them twice in the last couple of months to recover equipment stolen from our fleet. The police won't do chit about thieves, so this is our way of minimizing our exposure because the insurance company was sick of paying out on our smaller equipment that getting stolen.
The best friend a guy could have asked for. RIP chasing pheasants in heaven Denali girl.
