Grizzly Track???
« on: May 18, 2009, 10:50:57 PM »
Went hiking this past weekend with my wife near North Cascades National Park and came across these tracks in the snow.  I thought they were pretty big (my foot is a size 10.5), what do you guys think?  Any chance it could be from a grizz?

I realize the snow melted it a bit, but I'm not thinking Griz track, no claw marks of any kind, really rounded, I have to go with what is stated above...

No claws, couldn't be a grizz. Big cat.

I've only been in one area where I thought there might be grizz around, up near Republic, within 30 miles of the border I was on a mountaintop in the heart of the NF many years ago, I found an area where a very tall bear had torn up bark well above my head and found some bear piles that looked like an elephant. If it was a blackie, it was a monster.

I take that back, one other I recall was Bead lake, right on the Idaho border, where there was a rather large "beware of grizzlies" sign. :chuckle:

Would claw marks still be easily visible after melting out that much?  Assuming it is a cat track, isn't that pretty darn big?

Yes and no. A large grizzly will have 3 1/2" claws and you will always see the marks. A big cat, has oversized feet and you'll never see the claws in the tracks.

First glance, I thought cat track, second glance, still cat track...

Haven't seen too many cat tracks but I've seen a fair amount of grizzly tracks.
Heres the front and rear of the bear I killed last wednesday.
 Just for reference.
 Front.
