Vortex Question?
« on: September 03, 2022, 08:53:07 PM »
I’m looking to purchase a backup/2nd pair of Bino’s, not looking to spend a ton as I already have a good pair of Leupolds, should I buy the Roof Prism Vortex Diamondbacks or the Vortex HD Crossfire? Both are in 10x42, They are similar in price, I know the Diamondbacks are decent but I don’t know anything about the HD crossfires

Bought the crossfire hd 10x50 for my littlest birthday next week. I think they’re comparable to my leupold bx-1 Mackenzie hd’s. Neither are high end glass but I spot deer with mine at 3/4 of a mile.

For $200 on sale, I don't think you could beat the Diamondbacks.

The Leupold bx1 mackenzie's 10x50s are excellent for the money ($150 I think). We use them at work every day and they outshine 12x50 diamondbacks all day long. IMO vortex can be good but their quality control is their warranty. You might have to send a pair back to get some good ones.

Ive got the Viper HD 10x42.  Right physical size, right weight, but it ends there.  If Im not square to the world dc on the eye piece they are not clear.  Edge to edge clarity is poor at best and scanning makes you feel like youre out of focus anywhere but dead center of the lense.  Not a cheap pair of binos, not spendy, but certainly not cheap and I expected much better.

I am going to send them back because it seems they are seconds or the grind is for a lesser bino.  For what they call 500$ (msrp) glass, they should be far better edge to edge.  IMHO anything Viper on down is disappointing.  Didnt used to feel that way but now I do.

Don’t get me wrong I love mine, I just wasn’t going to spend the money on a new pair for my 6 year old  :chuckle: I figured I’d get her a pair she can drop and break and not cost me anything extra. Down the line when she’s more careful and responsible we’ll upgrade her.

I have a Vortex Razor spotter, I had 12x50 Razor HD bino’s (upgraded to Swaro’s), Diamondback 4-12 scopes (2 each), and a Viper 4-16 HSLR scope. I’ve never had any problems with any of them. I have heard a lot of gripes about Vortex over the years but I just haven’t personally had any issues. I take care of my stuff but I don’t treat any of them with kid gloves either. They get used!

On another note, I don’t believe you can go wrong with Leupold either! The last scope I bought was the VX5 HD 3-15 and I really like it!

If you're looking for glass for under $200, I think you're going to be hard pressed to find anything better and ANY other brand that offers a warranty on cheaper glass.  :twocents:

 . I own alot of Vortex and have used the warranty exactly 1 time . My dog ate my kids binos . I told her I would get her another pair instead of bothering Vortex. She decided to email them herself and told them exactly what happened. They asked to send them in and they would see what they could do . They sent her back a brand new pair . Which they upgraded to aHD glass and higher magnification, , also sent her a Bino Harness and a Dog chew toy .
PS I own alot of Leupold also and have used their warranty 5 times that I can think of right now .
