Mossberg 835
« on: May 16, 2009, 08:34:34 AM »
So what do you think about this shotgun? I have come to the conclusion that being left handed I am worried more about where the saftey is than which side the shell ejects from. And I like the tang safteys on the Mossbergs.

I was thinking about getting the flyway edition with the extended choke tubes.

I know some people hate them and some people love them so please tell what you think about them.

I went clay shooting with some buddies a few years back to try a few different shotguns to make up my mind. I wanted to get a Benneli Nova. After shooting an 870,Nova,and a Browning (model unknown). One of the guys laughed and said he had a Mossturd behind the seat of his truck. Well long story short it fit me the best of all of them and I had great target acquisition. Bought an 835 the next day. Saved me some $$$$ and also fits me like a glove. I have had no problems with it whatsoever.

great guns, they'll shoot everything every time but they are very loose and rattly feeling IMO. if that doesn't bother you, you won't be unhappy with one.

I bought one at the Puyallup a few months ago.  I should actually say I stole it, Ha!  Dirt cheap it was 'cause some idiot wanted a "Tactical Black" shotgun so they took after it with a can of Krylon spray paint.  High gloss even!  I was walking down the row and I saw this hideous looking POS.  Couldn't help but stop and gawk at it.  As I picked it up I noticed it said 3-1/2" Ulti-mag chamber.  Then I noticed it had a ported barrel.  Next I saw the screw-in chokes.  Hmm, I thought, maybe this thing aint so bad.  Definately worth a C-note.  Took it home and gave it a paint stripper bath.   I can't say I've shot it yet so can't comment on performance.  It looks to be a good sound shotgun and will make a great Turkey gun.

I owned an 835 for a short time. It was basicly a single shot. It would not extract/eject. I had it to the Mossberg factory authorized repair center four times before I gave up on it. I contacted the factory and they said to send it back COD. I took it apart and sent the prieces back COD in individual packages. Haven't seen it since. Don't care to have it back. I do think that their basic 500 model is pretty fool proof. I have know of several with thousands of rounds through them without a glitch.

I have an 835 that I use exclusively as a turkey gun.  While I've never had problems with my 835 I've seen some qualitative issues with the springs and with the fit and finish and even some misfire problems.  Overall they seem to be of average quality and dependability.  I'd question what kind of life you'd get out of em putting hundreds to thousands of rounds a year through 1.  I tried to use mine for waterfowl and to me it was like handling a 2x4.

Based on your left hand requirement check out the Browning BPS.... tang safety like the Mossberg and it has bottom ejection. No comparison in quality and construction.  Ithaca also makes a beautiful pump with bottom ejection... they are $pendy though.

No matter what shotgun you get... make sure it fits you.  Buying the best gun with lousy fit gets you nuttin!!!
