GMU 243 - Manson
« on: September 07, 2022, 04:41:05 PM »
Got a last minute work detail that has me running to the town of Manson for the weekend. Bummed I have to miss opener of archery elk but my work detail would allow me to hunt a morning and evening while I’m out there - can anyone point me in a direction to focus on for bear? I’ve never stepped foot in the unit.

If there are any elk nearby, I drew a multiseason tag so I’d be happy to haul the stick and string with me but some quick research makes it look like the elk are far and few between in 243. I typically hunt the cascade crest so any pointers would be much appreciated!

I should add that I’ll be hunting solo, and would be happy to tag along with someone that wants to hunt together. I prepare for hunting season so I can hike and pull my weight. Time is limited these days with a little one at home, multiple jobs, etc so any help at all is greatly appreciated!

I would target mitchell creek based on the timelines shared in your post.  You can get into some big country from downtown Manson in less than 30 minutes.  Highly unlikely you will run into many elk in that unit (however, not impossible) but there is a chance you will find a bear in there.

Antilon lake has some wet/ brushy areas with a few berries. I saw bear sign there a few years ago. Haven’t been there this year though…..

You'll see a lot of bear just off the main road there.   They feed near the road.  Its not uncommon to see several bear
