Removable ring
« on: September 09, 2022, 09:34:27 AM »
On my medium rifle, I am constantly taking off and putting on a scope. I have black tape indexing where I put the rings, and it’s almost always close to being “on”.  It’s never been more than a few inches off from where I want it, without additional adjustment.

I’ve been thinking about removable rings, the type with a large thumb lever used to secure them tothe bases.
I see plenty of good products, know enough to recognize good quality (all steel, name brand, etc).
I’d like be able to take my optics off and on, as needed or wanted, and hopefully not have to check zero; ie trust that it’s on.

Does anyone use these and have anything that I should know? It’s a Ruger rifle. Thanks.

The quick detach rings you to which you refer almost always mount to a picatinny rail.
I have a pair of QD rings, they are either Warne or Talley, 1" Medium height.
Matte black, excellent condition.
I'd make you a good deal on them if you're interested.

The Bobro Engineering B03-200-300-R9, QD mount is highly rated, though at the higher end price wise.

I am not a Vortex fan at all, but their QD mount gets high praise.

I have to wonder why you would be removing your scope so often?

I have never had a rifle scope come off a rifle and then go back on the same rifle (same spot, same torque, etc) that I have trusted to be accurate.  I have tested this with a few AR's and and Keltec Sub 2000's and I have never seen one go back on w/out needing to be sighted back in.  They are not far off....but they are off.

Maybe I'm not buying the right QD mounts.....but even if they do make such a thing, I'm not sure I would ever trust it based on my experiences

Also curious why your scopes come off and on rifles so often.  I almost never take my scopes off once mounted.

I hunt brown bear by myself, or I hunt black bear and moose in brown bear country.  My 375 can hunt as a sheep or moose or caribou gun and shoot a far poke, but sometimes I don’t want a scope when I’m packing meat, going into thick cover etc.

Obviously I’m not doing this in the field with standard rings, but I am very hot on the QD aspect

That makes a lot sense

I us a QD mount on a one of my ARs just in case of optic failure a quick switch to BUIS.
My hunting rifles are set up for each purpose. But I have never hunted Brown bear. I would want many options and new underwear,  :chuckle:

I once had a Lee Enfield No. 4 Mk.1 (T) (Sniper Variation) that kept its zero. I have delt with the German Claw Mounts that also keep zero.

What type of Ruger do you have?  77 with the integral scope mounts or something that uses removable bases like an American?  If you have the latter then there should be quite a few good options out there.

With the 77s you're kind of limited, you could probably call Ruger's factory rings somewhat detachable.  I have used Warne QD mounts on my .375 M77 without too much trouble (more play around target shooting than serious hunting though), my only issue with Warne rings(and it goes for all of theirs) is the weight, and the fact that their "low" rings are more of a "medium" height.  And, like pretty much everyone else, they don't make a "low" in 30mm, which really sucks because pretty much all of the low power (e.g. 1-4x) scopes being made these days are 30mm, and look pretty goofy sitting in medium rings.

I have heard really good things about Alaska Arms LLC rings, no personal experience though.  They are a little pricey, but available in multiple finishes and you can order them with left or right side detach levers depending on your preference.

in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun
