Flintlock Turkey
« on: March 07, 2022, 11:34:19 AM »
I've been watching some muzzleloader hunting on youtube. Of particular interest to me are flintlocks, all varieties from rifles to muskets and flowlers. I'm a turkey hunter with conventional shotguns but I was watching turkey hunting with muskets and I was fascinated. Has anyone here hunted turkey with a flintlock? What variety, smoothbore musket or fowler? And any tips or comments on this topic for a non-muzzleloader person like me?
Sort of timely post because I'll be going to the Cascade gunshow this coming weekend in Enumclaw.

Thank youm
Cliff

I've killed a couple with black powder shotguns. Mine have been with percussion not flintlock. Smoothbore fowler would be a great hunting arm. The musket was more of a military weapon but it would work. Take a look at the traditional muzzleloading forum. They have a dedicated hunting section and a smooth bore section. That forum is dedicated to traditional and there's a wealth of info on your inquiry.  I'm going to try and hit that show this weekend as well.

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate your help. I'll check this link out, is this the url you are referring to: https://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/forums/traditional-muzzleloader-hunting.17/                    In regard to the weapon, I was thinking a .62 caliber smoothbore musket (equivalent to 20ga) could double as a big game gun at closer ranges. My whole interest in black powder is in the historical aspect of sport, and in particular the flintlock variation. I dabbled around with BP when I was young in the early 70's and had a cap & ball revolver but I always was drawn to flint. Anyway, thank you.

That’s the one.  You can go into the main forum and look at the flintlock section as well as the smooth bore section. I will warn you to be careful. This black powder quest can really sink it’s teeth into a fella. Lol
