Great rule change
« on: May 19, 2009, 03:39:25 PM »
I don't think anybody has mentioned this but they changed the rules as to ML restrictions during modern hunting seasons. You can use 209 or a scope. Sounds like they really listened to our feedback on those surveys they were doing. Now I have two more rifles I can hunt with if I want. Great news.

I just read and re-read the regs.  It specifically says "telescoping sights or sights containing glass are prohibited" (page 62 section 3b of the Muzzleloader regs).  Says nothing about 209, but I'm not a muzzleloader so there may be a part that states what must be used that makes 209 illegal.

Pg. 62
5.
Muzzleloading firearms used during a modern
firearm
season are not required to meet ignition,
sight, or double barrel restrictions.

Page 62 paragraph 5. remember this is only during modern season not ML season. In other words if you got a TC Encore and all your buddies want to go modern elk your rifle is legal.

Guess I need to read the whole post.  I missed the part that said during modern.  I stand corrected.

Glad I'm not the only one.  :chuckle:

No, it used to say muzzle loaders used during modern season have to comply with all ML season requirements. In other words no scopes. Except for some age related exceptions like in the Battleground unit. What it means is if you really enjoy front loading guns you can now buy anything on the market, even that new Savage 110 that shoots smokeless powder and use it if you are so inclined. It makes all the gear legal for modern hunting season for big game.

Now the question I have is. If you hunting in a firearms restricted area during modern firearms season. Do you still have to have a muzzleloader that meets muzzle loader requirements or can you use a muzzleloader that has 209, scope, closed breach?  :dunno:
It's not the size of the trophy that make's it a trophy.

YES!!!  If it's a muzzleloader, you can use it. That's what this topic is all about.

I'm missing something.  How can a 209 be legal?

Ignition is to be wheel lock, matchlock,
flintlock, or percussion using original style
percussion caps that fit on the nipple and
are exposed to the weather. "Exposed to
the weather" means the percussion cap or
the frizzen must be visible and not capable
of being enclosed by an integral part of the
weapon proper. Primers designed to be
used in modern cartridges are not legal.
Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.
