Rimrock 364 area elk
« on: September 19, 2022, 06:38:42 AM »
Been up scouting a couple of times in the rimrock area for elk, seen some signs that they are there, just no elk. Curious to hear if anyone else has seen any elk up there lately.  Please post pics would love to see them :)  Good luck to all of the elk hunters out there!

Narrow Neck Gap...hike in only.Reservation elk herds rut up there and drop over into the Rez and Klickitat Meadows once the shooting starts. I've accessed the unit from the Darland Mountain side....can be done

That unit is chalked full of elk. I don't really hunt it but hike and camp in it all the time. It's very thick but those thick areas hold tons of elk. I've run into entire herds not more than a mile from the road in the thick stuff. I think because its so thick it is less desirable to hunters.

Klickitat Meadows is on the Rez.. We would stay on Darland and then 4 wheeler toward Blue Lake and then take a spur road/trail to the south west to access the Rimrock unit . Or we stayed at Minnie Meadows and took a logging road to the end and hiked into a big basin up there that had a huge stream coming out of the middle of a rock slide. I was up close to the Gap one time when an A-6 jet came shooting through the gap right over my head and then dove down through the canyons toward Rimrock Lake...Really cool. Too old and a screwed up back so I'll probably never be able to get in there again.   Yes, my Honey Hole..... that I've kept close to me for 39 years. Hope you make it in there. I archery shot a 300 inch bull there that had a collar around his neck that was put on the bull in March the year before near White Swan on the Rez. Hunting buddy missed a new state record bull...or so he looked at the time.

looking forward to one more scouting trip before the season starts.  It is definitely steep and thick in there but beautiful none the less!  Thanks again for the tips everyone!  Hopeful that we can meet up in person if you are hunting in there.  I will keep you posted as to what happens with this hunt.

I just got done archery hunting there last week and got completely skunked.  Went up there in middle of August to scout and had eyes on elk everyday and fresh sign everywhere I hiked.  Went back up there the 9th and all the elk were gone.  Spent a week hiking all over the unit from conrad meadows, back into the wilderness,  up the mountain from Minnie meadows,  up the mountain on Western side,  up near lost lake on long lake. In a week of hunting from sun up till sun down not only did I never see an elk but I never even found fresh sign.  When I would find somewhat fresh sign it still looked 3-5 days old.  Would find the occasional set of fresh tracks in the timber but usually looked like from a lone bull.
I drew a cow tag that's why I was hunting the unit.  With all the elk I saw in August I thought it would be a cake walk.  Boy was I wrong.  It's like Sept 1st rolled around and they all migrated out of the unit for the rut. Hopefully they'll be back for muzzy season.

The elk are still there...they just get smart in Sept.
It's a hard unit to figure out but once you do it's a great place to hunt. :twocents:

It’s about as quiet as I’ve ever seen it at rimrock( I’ve only hunted 2 separate days). My hunting partners only heard 1 single bugle in the time they’ve spent here. 2006 was a lot like this

I did run into this nice 6 point right before dark

:yeah:

No question that there are plenty of elk in Rimrock and surrounding units. If you're on fresh sign, just keep at it. You'll find them. Take your time, and don't be like me or you'll accidentally chase them out of the county  :chuckle:

Good luck!

Well as my luck would have it, we were not able to get another scouting trip in before the opener of the any bull tag, that my brother drew.  Oh well we have plans A, B, C etc in place so hopefully we can be successful up there next week!  Looking forward to spending some quality time out in the woods with my dad and brother in a new area.  Wishing everyone the best of luck and hope to have some updates in the near future.

Well we gave it a good try but came up empty handed.  We covered lots of area but only saw one cow.  Still had a great time in the great outdoors with my dad and brother!  Wouldnt trade the memories for nothing!  Maybe next year.

You have all this week to. Was it a rifle bull tag? Id at least go up later when all the cow hunters are pushing elk around.
