Youth Grande Ronde GMU 186
« on: September 25, 2022, 08:34:28 AM »
I thought I put my 11 year old in for Mountain View, but when I read his letter from WDWF it was for the Grande Ronde unit.

Just looking for general knowledge of the area. Is there lots of bucks? Does Rock’n J properties allow hunting?

Any information would be helpful for my kid.

Thanks in advance.

There is a decent amount of public access in places, but you gotta hike a lot and it is steep and deep.  Rock'n J's are D***s and hate hunters, unless they've miraculously changed.  They think they own the public around them.  You will have to work to find some bucks, but there may be some private that will help around there as it's for a kid.

Good luck!

The Ronde can get a lot of pressure. But it can hold good deer. Be ready to hike steep stuff. Rock N J are not cool.  4-0 Ranch is now open to public. Lots of BLM. Good luck!

Isn't the 4-0 in the mountain view unit?

Thank you everyone for the information!

not the several years I hunted it. Never even saw a person! hell 1 year sitting at a public land trailhead we spotted a 4pt muley and put a stalk on it for the wife and she shot it all within sight of the truck on a sunny blue sky day 70 deg and not 1 truck ever drove down that road.

Looks like the benefit of this special permit is it is an "any deer" permit during the general season which is 3pt or better.  If you are just looking for "any deer" then you should be able to find that easy enough. I haven't been in the unit during the deer season, but have been through there in the summer quite a bit and usually see quite a few does and young bucks all along the river.  I would think it would be pretty easy to find "any deer" in the unit without having to venture too far into the steep and deep.
