Grande Ronde Archery Bull tag
« on: June 15, 2022, 09:06:52 AM »
Well with 5 or 6 points i drew the archery any bull tag for gmu 186, i thought i had changed it back to point saver but apparently not.... How seriously should i take this tag? i drew a great mule deer tag in nevada and really only have two weeks off this year.... any opinions on this? i was not expecting to draw anything in washington this year.
if it flies it dies!

I think you have the option to return tags this year and get your points back, maybe someone can confirm.  I don't know anything about that unit, so can't help you there.

Take it serious dude. Big tough country could produce big results. Congrats

Wow the access is tough in that area but I've always dreamed of getting in there and hiking around.  Would be amazing to see the country and if there are a couple big bulls or bucks hiding down there.

i know there is probably an opportunity at a decent bull, i wish i have time to take the whole season off, but a rifle mule deer hunt ive waited six years for will take the priority for my time off.
i have the gear, just got to get my butt in shape for that country. anyone have pictures of bulls from that unit?

I drew the archery tag a few years ago, bull on the right.

That’s a stud. Did you horseback in? Was it a tough hunt?

I've spent time in the 186 chasing birds. Access is adequate but requires a tremendous amount of vertical ascent from the roads. Never seen any quality bulls on the public pieces. Maybe the private lands hold a masher tucked away in a tiny fold of land out of sight.

it would be my first bull with a bow so i would take whatever walked out... could be a good time chasing some solitude and peace.

I’ve hunted the Ronde a few times for deer. I had one trip where I was cow calling at a couple bulls on private only a few hundred yards away. I would think during September they would’ve come over to investigate. It is steep country but once you’re on top it’s easy getting around. Practice your longer shots and cow calling.

I had the tag last year. I had a great hunt, even though I didn't end up tagging a bull. I also had the issue of having drawn a tag in CO which overlapped with the GR tag. Bolsen was a great source of information. He was in contact with my son. If you have any questions or want some advice based on what I experienced, send me a message.
