Strangest Sound
« on: October 07, 2022, 01:34:56 PM »
Hunting partner, my son and myself were having lunch at the trucks in 672 a couple days ago. We were parked in the shade surrounded by trees but could see a portion of the sky. All of a sudden we could hear this noise overhead that sounded ultra fast and approaching and then just disappear. We looked up and didn't see anything and our eyes were as big as saucers!! WTF was that!!! Anyone in the Butte Creek/Raymond area hear anything like Wednesday afternoon?
I would say happened in less than 10 seconds.

I experienced something in the high country this year that I hadn't before. It was just like you are describing. I was on a steep slope, and the wind was blowing, but I could pretty much see everything around me. Here comes this noise, and I'm thinking WTH is that? Freaked me out the first few times. It turned out to be flocks of birds; wild pigeons I think but maybe other types too. They were screaming down the mountain and making a crazy sound(s) because of the way the wind was blowing. It was pretty cool to see and hear once I figured out I wasn't about to be taken out by who knows what.
Everyone lives off the land.  Some of us simply have more fun doing it.

At first my son and hunting partner both thought maybe a flock of birds but it just seemed too darned fast. And the noise didn't sound like any type of engine noise. Just really weird. Freaked us out! :yike:

We were able to hear it coming, much louder than a flock of birds. Went right over us but nothing was there. Once it passed over us the sound was gone.

Yes, exact same thing heard in Twisp on Tuesday mid day. I thought it was some kind of missile. Never saw anything.

Night hawk?

Probably not, if they were having lunch. I’ve been dive bombed by them quite a few times right before dark lol

any manner of  birds make weird noises when cutting the wind in a dive or flyby.  Kestrel, Falcon, Raven, as mentioned night hawks(nightjars) feeding, doves, especially the big fat eurasians chasing each other, grouse, or have a turkey fly by your head.

This was definitely not any type of bird, it had a distinct mechanical sound of propulsion, but not like any type of common aircraft engine.

That's exactly what it sounded like and was over in about 5 seconds it seemed like. Spooky!

Someone mentioned drone, I am of the belief that it could be military testing, it isn't like they can do proto type  testing out in the masses.

Ever been in the mountains and hear a noise at the  same time that  you look up and can see the fighter jet haulin a in the sky.   That was  just one  of the noisy ones.

Something to think about.

Wondering if that's why the elk were nowhere to be found down there.  :dunno: Never saw a single one in a clear cut this year and didn't find much sign in the timber either. Waiting to see what 658 will be like for the late hunt.
