2022 Idaho hunting journal
« on: October 09, 2022, 10:11:51 PM »
We have a ton of deer and elk tags between all the people in my family and my hunting partners. 10 deer tags and 3 elk tags. Very ready to hit the woods tomorrow after work and play in them every night until the middle of December! I’ll post pics as we go and let you see some beautiful country along the way. We are not picky hunters, although we save a couple tags for the rut. Our overall goal is to fill the freezers! Pic is of my Australian shepherd Adak out scouting with me today.
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

That whitetail you posted a while back should keep the adrenaline flowing.  Knowing that’s out there

Been out couple nights this week. Had two soccer games tonight. Yesterday we saw over 70 deer and only 3 bucks. One was definitely a 140” ish shooter but it didn’t pan out. We did find a cool deadhead. This weekend pretty much if it’s brown it’s down. We can take either sex elk or deer and I’m focusing on helping my daughter since volleyball is over for her Friday!

Went out last night for a bit and only saw a couple deer, no bucks. We went higher up into the timber out of the valleys. We have permission on over 1000 acres down low but wanted to look for elk as well. Checked a couple trail cams with plenty of pics and didn’t have a single animal on them during shooting hours within the last week. The moon and warmer temps are really playing havoc. Couple pics just showing the times of day they are scooting around.

I was over there for a few days and I can also attest to the fact that the elk especially were laying pretty low due to the temps

We went out last night to check cameras on a new property we have permission on and got to the top of the hill about 1/2 mile in and bump, bump, bump. I kicked about a dozen cows out of their bed 🤦🏻‍♂️ This morning was opener of cow season so we quickly backed out and went up this morning. My hunting partner stayed low and my daughter and I went up the ridge and around. Was a great plan, saw deer, moose, a coyote and even 4 cow elk but could put it together. They were trotting away from us in broken timber and didn’t present the shot I wanted. Back home for a few hours and head back out this afternoon.

I'll be following along as I sit in my house wishing I was in the field looking for critters.  Hopefully next week I can get after it for a bit.

Good luck to you and all your family.

Uggggggg, all I have to say is it’s been a long time since I’ve missed and it still feels the same 🤢 Had people trespass onto the private land we are hunting tonight and shoot at a cow 250 yards up in front of us. The herd cut down and below us. I sprinted my fat butt, more like an A bad hobble back down the hill where they crossed below us. I need a knee replacement at some point and feel it tonight. Once I got to the bottom where we saw 5 cows and a nice bull cut below us I pushed quickly up the other ridge following them. Got up about 1/4 mile and had a cow standing 100 yards away looking at me. Of course I forgot my trigger sticks in the truck and tried a freehand shot. I now see why Cameron Hanes works out so much lol. As my crosshairs bobbed up and down going across the vitals I squeezed off my shot. I thought it was true but we spent the next hour and half looking and never found a drop of blood. Uggggg it’s been years since I’ve missed and it still stinks… No matter what it’s been fun being in elk and deer everyday. Oh well, up at 4:30 tomorrow and back at it. I think we may fill a doe tag or two tomorrow so we feel better about the start of our season.

Took a break from elk hunting this morning and took my buddy who’s never got a big game animal out. We saw 4 bucks and settled on this one. Great first animal! Went in the front of the chest and found the 300 win 150 gr bullet in the back hip.

Side note, Nov. 1st needs to get here, I saw a TOAD 4x4 heavy muley! Watched him at 200 yards just walk away.

Went out tonight and saw a couple of cow elk and a nice 4 pt whitetail.  I can definitely tell the moon phase is changing. It’s been crazy warm for middle October and hanging meats been hard. Right now I’m putting quarters in 150 qt coolers with a block of ice in a bag wrapped in a towel during the day and hanging outside at night. Check out the outside meat cooler 😎 perfect use for an extra dog kennel. Keeps all the critters away and let’s the meat breath and stays dry.
