Spray painting a shotgun?
« on: October 05, 2022, 08:54:04 PM »
I have a Remington 870 20 gauge with a little surface rust. I was thinking of giving it a paint job with Rustoleum. Anybody ever do this? Thoughts, recommendations? Was thinking an olive drab or desert sand color.
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

I did this with an old 10 ga single shot.  Worked great and I used rustoleum.  Made a camo pattern out of it.  I would not recommend this for a gun that is worth much.

I did it once.

I watched a bunch of youtube videos on it.

If you search spray paint a shotgun there are some really good tutorials and some guys did some cool paint jobs with rattle cans.

Good luck.

Before cammo and flat black guns were available I always sprayed my shotguns with mat varathane. My saltwater gun I just use hi-temp engine flat black. No issues after 30 years  :twocents:

I painted my 11-87.
Spent some time masking the parts I knew didn't want sprayed and went to town.
I started with a textured dark olive then threw light passes of Krylon Camo tan and brown using backyard trimmings as stencils.
It came out pretty good.

My main shotgun for years was an old Savage pump that was green when dad bought it for me. Sanded it down and repainted several years later. Never an issue, but the thing was already ugly as sin and saw years of use as a complete utility tool. I would consider other options on a gun of any value.

I would recommend brownells aluma Hyde or durncoat.
Both you can buy in a spray can.

You can buy it on Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/Brownell-Aluma-Hyde-Epoxy-Firearms-Finish/dp/B00XCZUBDG

As long as you do some prep work ,it will last much longer.
Also it takes some time to cure, you can bake your parts in oven to speed up the process.
But you can't spray and go hunting the next day.

I sprayed my 870 about 10 years ago for the same reason. Read about it from a few sources and made sure to prep it really well. Its held up very well with only a couple small touchups in high wear areas.
