YTC any Elk and Peaches any Bull here I come
« on: October 13, 2022, 08:51:13 PM »
The wait is over, headed out tomorrow to help my 70 year old mom with her disabled any elk tag at the training center. She is the reason I got into hunting almost 35 years ago. Beyond excited to spend the week chasing elk with her. After that she gets to help me with my Peaches Ridge any bull tag. We have three weeks to get it done!!

I was at the check in back in September and there were a handful of bulls killed opening day or the archery special permit

Thanks!! I have heard of a few bulls killed also. Other than that pretty quite. Fingers crossed the units I am hoping to hunt are open, pretty much a roll of the dice. I will update here as much as possible. Good Luck and shoot straight to all headed out this weekend.

You have to pick which “units” for a lack of a better word you can go into.  You get to choose 3, they have to be available, as they close down certain ones continuously for training purposes.  You call the evening prior to find out which ones are available.  When you sign in youngive them your choices of the available ones.  Some hold elk, some don’t.

Well the YTC didn’t disappoint. After two full days of only seeing deer we found a couple bulls. Mom is not able to hike much so we needed to find one in relatively easy terrain which I knew would not be easy. We had met another hunter(Cory) around lunch on Monday. We talked about what tags we had and what we were seeing and what areas we were heading to next so not to crowd each other. I got about a half mile down the road and Cory came flying down the road flagging us down, said he spotted a bull heading into the draw we were headed to. I told him sweet I would let him go after it and good luck. He said no way he wanted Mom and I to go after it as he wanted her to get her first elk. After a brief discussion I reluctantly agreed as I am a believer in first to spot first to stalk. I only saw the bull for a few seconds before he dropped out of sight. As we made our stalk I spotted a spike bedded at 51 yards. I knew that wasn’t the one we spotted earlier, mom was so excited she said that one will work :chuckle:. As she was getting ready for the shot he winded us and took off at full speed, no shot. Well the bigger bull then got up 100 yards below us and ran out to 175 yards before he stopped and looked to see what spooked them and that’s all it took. One shot and he ran 100 yards and piled up. I have never seen my mom so excited. This was really difficult physically for her and she never gave up. Now to talk about Cory who I literally just met. What an incredible man. He not only led us to the bull, insisted on us harvesting it he also helped pack quarters. And I mean he made four trips to the truck with meat bags. As I was processing and bagging he was packing. Only a 1/4 mile to the truck but still a task that would have taken me all day by myself.  While talking with Corey I found out he has never killed a elk himself, what a completely selfless act on his behalf to do what he did. The hunting gods will be looking after you my friend. FYI we need more Corey’s in the field.  Anyhow I am prepping for my Peaches Ridge bull hunt next week, hoping the good luck continues.
