Heard of two decent bucks taken today. Early morning. Going to try and get the wife on one this weekend.

I did see one fork in someone’s yard and one nice 4pt on the top of a Jeep.

Saw 6 bucks today. 7 counting a 3 point my buddy shot. Could have shot 3 of them. A small spike. A small 2x3 and a 3x3. If the 3x3 would have been in a better spot I might have taken him. But he was way back and would have had to cross a creek with him. The 2x3 and 3x3 ran right towards me chasing a doe. Holding out for now.

3 of those bucks ran towards me without paying any attention to me. 1 small forkie was in a yard with 6 does, another smaller branch buck jumped out on the ahead of me and ran down it and right behind where my truck was parked. The other 1 ran across the road in front of me while I was heading to a new area.

I put a lot of time in thick brush from just after daylight till about 1230. Came home and got a couple projects done. Then went back out about 3 until dark. I'm feeling it tonight. Back at it in the morning.

I was disappointed with the deer activity where I was today. Bumped a couple singles in brush too heavy to see them. Did a few rattling sets and the first one yielded my typical “success” (an unidentified deer bouncing away that I didn’t see before or after it leapt away).

I have decent results rattling deer to my vicinity but I’ve never seen one of them well enough to see if it’s a buck, let alone kill it.

Sometimes I wonder if I’m doing more harm than good because while they come towards me, they are extremely alert/cautious. Maybe I’m just bringing the dinks so far and one day a bruiser will come crashing in.

I suggest rattling from a tree stand or from a position that prevents bucks from getting down wind of you (cliff/creek/wide open clearcut with no cover) - that allows you to add a bit of control in determining what direction a buck will come in from. BT rarely run right in to  a hunter rattling -  it happens, but not very often.  More likely, they might take 10, 20, or even 30 minutes to make their way toward your position. If at all possible, a cautious buck will likely work it's way around you to get downwind in an attempt to scent check just what you are.   If you can't eliminate an approach from that side of you, stay hidden and pay extra attention to your downwind side.  I find this type of hunting to be the most exciting when bucks are around.

Trail cams around my apple trees show that the deer are pretty calm in my area in Stella.  Had another 3 pt. show up in early daylight yesterday, but he was eating apples and did not scent check the area much.  Traveling up to Mason tomorrow to end the season there. Willipa Hills was blown out this AM where I went today.  I'm not feeling too lucky - I seem to mostly see only young bucks once the peak of the rut has passed.

All good suggestions.

I know the downwind bit.

This one was odd because I don’t think it winded me. And unlike other times, I didn’t stand up and start moving. I was stationary and looking in its direction when it just started bouncing away.

It seemed far away to have been able to really make me, either. I guess maybe it just got nervous or a wind swirl for me. It was 90° away from downwind and about 75 yards out, still.

I’m going to try the tree stand on Sunday, I think.

What a difference a day makes. Saw 2 does yesterday morning. 1 doe in the evening.

Headed out shortly. If  I see a good forked horn or better I may not let it walk today.

Likewise. Good luck. I think the freezing weather keeps them in bed until 8 or 8:30 here. Should see movement on trails around then.

I think your right. I didnt spend as much time back in the brush yesterday either so that was probably part of it.
I was going to sleep in a couple hours this morning just for the reason you said. My internal clock wouldnt let me, so here I go!

Good luck to you also!

Just shot a nice forky. I had bumped two does and they crossed a clearing about 200 yards wide. I gave it about 15 minutes and this guy came out of the timber like a fullback on the one yard line right where the does had walked. So needless to say they are ruttin hard yet.

Dead quiet in E. Mason.  Cold mornings have the animals sleeping in till around 11:00 AM.  I've seen a ton of doe in the last two days - fifteen or so, 80% of which had kids and grandkids with them.  Saw at least five doe standing out looking suspiciously hot and waiting for mister right. Sitting on those few doe till something happened produced nothing at all.  Zero bucks moving.  Heard a few shots yesterday that were likely hunters.  Only one shot heard today - around 4:00 PM, well away from my area.  Locals that have deer coming and going from their yards had seen zero bucks in at least two weeks.  Last reported rut-like appearance was around 04 Nov,

Tons of buck sign - absolute buck mayhem on my D. Fir plantation.  Rubs, and broken trees everywhere suggesting that there are at least 10 or so bucks beating the bushes at night. Other than a 1.5 Y/O small three point that almost ran into me while I was at my mailbox at home two days ago, I've seen nothing bigger than a small forkie during the entire season.  Sheesh!  I'm ready to stick a fork in this season.  It's all but done.

He finally slipped up early this morning. I First saw this buck grunting in the thick stuff on the 24th. Rubs and tracks all the rest of season told the story, but he never showed. Thursday morning, there were more rubs in his home and lots of deer activity at first light. But only a young 2 point with does. Today he was cruising from timber and was damn near on his rub line, I heard him coming down the side of the road thru the frozen maples. 60 yard shot ended our saga.
