Setting up for bad habits?
« on: October 20, 2022, 03:34:21 PM »
Hey all
My Brittany is a 1 1/2 old now been working a lot on handling no official bird work he’ll point robins for a quick second then chase and stops to look when he loses sight of them
Then he’ll run back to the thick cover they came from and do it again then when there are no more in a particular spot he moves on
for you that have hunted over dogs more than I have
I’ve always heard don’t shoot what they haven’t pointed
I want to take him to Cooke canyon and get him and my daughters on there first hunt and birds
My question is am I setting up bad habits if he’s pointing only for a quick second on the birds and they flush and are shot
I’ve heard just letting them get out there the birds will teach him als
I hope this post makes sense I tend to ramble at times lol
Thank you in advance

Brittanies can also have flushing instincts. Versatile dog they are. The right scent hits his nose and he'll know what to do. A bit of hold practice will go a long way. And don't worry about shooting birds that flush away from the dog. They can't find em all, so enjoy the extra shooting.
