Snort Wheeze
« on: November 16, 2007, 08:49:35 AM »
Have any of you guys heard a snort wheeze before.  Not your grunt or typical buck snort, or deer blowing trying to scent you, which is what most people consider a buck snort.  A real true snort wheeze.  The deer inhales creating a wonderful sucking sound, then blows snot and every last ounce of air at his opponent.  Its a pretty cool sound.  Most of the time they posture or fight, and the snort wheeze is pretty rare.  Both whities and mulies do it.  Anyhow, there was a little two point harassing this guy, and this guy finally got fed up and took a dive at him, squared off and let out a wonderful snort wheeze.....

I have...the first time i thought i was about to get my ass handed to me.
:fire.:

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

I have it was very interesting.  I had a two point that scared the piss out of me on the other side of a round bale.  After changing my shorts, I stood up and showed him who was on the other side.
I wouldn't consider it rare, and it can be a good tactic when rattling.  I have never tried it.  Have seen it used in battle also, about 6 years ago.

It usually catches you by surprise.  Did me anyway.  Didn't even know he was there until I heard him weeze, pretty much got the adrenaline going.  By then all I could see was azz and horns.  :)

That pics looks like he's a decent young two point??

Don't confuse it with them blowing because they are scared, or trying to scent you.  Its an official challenge.  They usually lower their head, stiffen their legs, eyes closed then snort WHHHHEEEEEEZZZZZZ.   I've seen it in person twice and on tape once. What I am talking about Cipryan is very rare.   I wish I could remember what film.  Its freakin COOL!

I know when they are trying to sniff me out, I think it is funny and it is fun to play back with them.  Camo works wonders.

This was something different.  I never heard anything like that before, there was probably a 150 deer in the alfalfa field with me and this buck thru that at me.  I have been wrong before in my life and not afraid to be wrong again.

I have seen it on video.  Don't have the video either.

No problem.  Its so hard to describe a sound.  I've had so many people tell me a buck snort was a deer trying to blow and smell.  Sure....how do you explain that its a doe.  Its just when you say it shouldn't be considered rare, you through me for a loop.  You have to know I spend alot of time in the deer woods.

I spent every morning and evening in the thick cottowoods with whitetail growing up.  I have seen bucks go at it and does get pounded on, all within 100 yds on a daily basis.  But I heard what I thought was wheeze.  I meant no offense.  I just thought if it was rare than why did a big dumb animal such as myself witness it. :)
