What's going on in Klickitat County?
« on: October 24, 2022, 05:34:17 PM »
Last year we had 3 bucks that lost their antlers before and during the first couple of days of the modern deer season. This year my brother shoots a deer in full velvet and it has no Testicles . Then my wife see's on Facebook , an article where 13 bucks were reported with the same condition? Taken  between  Klickitat  and Bickleton. Can we blame it on Global Warming or the Windmills?

Saw a buck second day of season full velvet still , other things to consider the late summer , what are they putting on the crops , lots of things but I’ll say hunted that way for 30 years and always see a buck or 2 with some velvet

One of my technicians killed a buck in the okanogan opening day in full velvet with no nuts.

I also know of 2 bucks that were killed in full velvet and no nuts in that area. I was told it was EHD.

I know there were a LOT more deer in Klickitat County before the windmills came in. An influx of lions did not help.

I've worked on some of those wind farms. That's the thing, the deer are on the same properties as the turbines. Very little hunting takes place on the wind farms so they make for a safe haven. My coworker even saw a lion blow a stalk on a herd of does right nearby a tower. Some landowners have people hunting, but saw very few over the years.

The area I am familiar with had an influx of lions after or about the time the windmills came in. I'm sure two events are unrelated, just bad timing to hit all at once. I would venture to say the lions are having more effect on the deer than the windmills. In the 2000s, the deer population was off the charts, not so much now. There is still deer, but not like it was. I'd love opinions from Carpsniper or Firefighter4607. I'm just going off of my own infrequent observations, those guys would have an educated opinion.

Getting back to the original topic, just last year in late December I saw a velvet muley buck in the Paterson unit of the NWR. That is the same general vicinity. Maybe there is something going on. Chemicals in the water turning the frogs g@y.  :dunno:

Could be due to estrogen mimickers. These are chemicals that mimic estrogen in the body. There are herbicides like atrazine that are known mimickers as are many other chemicals in consumer goods. I'd be curious as to what herbicides are commonly used in the local crops.

Estrogen does not cause men to be gay. In the same way, testosterone does not turn a female gay. Testosterone may however make women horney.  Estrogen and estrogen mimickers certainly could influence the formation of sexual organs.

I think it has more to do with inbreeding and things like that. Because on Kodiak Island they have lots of deer like that. And there’s nobody spraying chemicals way out there and there’s no wind farms in that remote area either but there is a limited amount of deer that keep breeding over and over. And I think that affects the deer

My best understanding after talking with a bio and being in the area. It is the thought that these deer are the survivors of EHD. That it has messed up this years and maybe following years testosterone levels. Most bucks are normal in the reproductive areas maybe just a little small in the sack is what I have heard. They just didn't develop enough levels to finish growing out normal and rub the velvet off.

Now as to the deer levels. I have never seen so few on our bigger ranch. Local to town the levels seem close to normal.
It was crazy hot and a very off year. I think muzzleloader season I will be able to talk more about actual deer numbers.

The wife and I haven’t seen any bucks as described in this thread. A decent number of game cam pics but everything looks normal. However it was a strange year and it didn’t seem like dee river started moving. I also having found dead deer like there was any kind of die off I just think the big bucks stayed hidden longer.

Im curious if there’s a certain little area this is happening.

Weird to say the least. It would be a much more interesting of this occurred around Hanford.

Huh, I downed one like this also (but east of Klickitat County). Thought maybe the late spring and summer had something to do with it? Still in velvet, mine had nuts but they were pretty small. The antlers were a bit odd too, tall but very thin tines.
