Safety sleeves?
«

so, I experienced a first this hunting season. After 25+ years, I punctured myself right before dark. After all day showing my son knife safety while skinning and boneing out his deer (which I packed its hind quarters out on my back, back to camp) I was just about done skinning and getting that last little bit when I don't know why I did what I did but I turned the knife and stuck it into my wrist. It was, like you'd think, a fountain squirting out of my wrist. Used my right hand thumb to close the vein and held it above the level of my heart. I new to stay calm and went to the tent and asked my son to grab the first aid kit. Instructed him on the importance of staying calm and cool. One step at a time. Thankfully I was able to get the bleeding to stop and sutures and bandaged (duct tape). Nicked a tendon as well but will recover and still play the piano lol.
BUT, it got me thinking. Expect the unexpected, all these years and then that happened, what if I couldn't get it to stop? What would my son do? All the other hunters were hunting, it was just my son and I.
But anyway, what I'm asking is. Is there a safety sleeve anyone recommends? Do I need one? Will it ever happen again? I don't know, I don't think so, but dang, I'm still shocked that I did that. And I made sure to bring a first aid kit this year and never have before all these years.what are the odds right lol. But after that experience, age, getting complacent I think I'd like to add alittle more safety to our hunting camp.
Any suggestions?

Not sure about sleeves, but I've heard of people using fish fillet gloves that protect against slicing but not poking

We use kevlar sleeves in construction. They might not help a ton with a direct puncture, never seen the data on that. Linked below are ANSI A3 level. The higher the level, the better protection. The second link describes the different levels. I'd pick an ANSI cut resistant level you want, then search for products with that in mind (i.e. google "ANSI A7 level kevlar sleeves). The same system is used for gloves. It you're just concerned about protecting your wrists, most gloves extent well over the wrists.

A cut resistant glove on your non knife hand can help. Like said stabs are not as protected against, they are more for a slash.
One thing we always talk about is to carry a torniquet and some kind of quick clot. These 2 things and Benadryl are 3 things everyone should carry in a first aid kit. Those 3 things can save a lot of lives in accidents that turn fatal in the woods.
Always have them in the pack and in the cars.

Allergic reactions, bee stings, any allergies…etc
I carry an epipen, for such occasions.
I’m allergic to aspirin and nsaids, obviously quite using them, but occasionally still have the reaction that causes swelling of half my tongue, or lips on one side only. Can’t imagine if both sides did it.🤯
