Poll: Shortening the time to apply for special permits?

This is the time of year to email potential changes to the commission, permit manager and director.   From my experiences being a witness and talking with those involved in the draw process, It seems by shortening the application period MAY, shorten the results time.  The reason I say this, each week when the application process is open, those very few at wdfw who look over the process have to do a weekly report, run the process to make sure all is well.  After some conversations with other hunting buddies, it may make sense to shorten the open period for applying to around 15 days.  That way, less reports being run should equal a shorter time for results AND less issues between wdfw and the subcontractor.  I know this won't stop those thousands of procrastinators who wait till 11:30pm to buy their permits and apply, which causes massive headache's for wdfw permit employees, get your damn permits in earlier for Gods sake.  Anyway,  just curious how the hunting community would react to shortening the open period to apply?  They are pretty quick already with results, but it's a ton of work to get them out quick.  Would you support this change?  I'm sure there are lots of other ideas, this is just one ides that has come up.

I am not sure what all happens after the application deadline but I think that once its closed, it should just be a verification process and not trying to fix things for applicants who messed something up. We know WELL ahead of time what the dates are and have PLENTY of time to apply. If you can't get your application in correctly by the deadline, tough luck.

I’ve told them many times that if people screw up and they wait till the last minute, they should just get points and left out of the draw. But there are some legalities or something that makes them fix people f ups.

I personally feel the application period is way too long!! 99% of peeps already know what they are applying for, and 15 days is plenty of time to change your mind.

I agree. As long as the regs are out ahead of time, we don't need more than 2 weeks.

I have been a witness as well and the people that wait until the deadline are a big issue. I know everyone thinks too bad you messed up move on but if it is you that got distracted by work, marriage issues, health issues or whatever you would want some slack cut because “I’ve been applying for 22 years with no problem cut me some slack and fix this”.

With that said the one thing that could get us results sooner is making the application deadline sooner. I agree most know exactly what they are going to put in for, the same thing they have done for the last 22 years , so moving the deadline up a bit shouldn’t be an issue.

The first year it will suck for those not paying attention kind of like moving the grouse opener to the 15th but word will get out.

I’m all for shortening the application period.

Just read the poll options and I think depending on the year your option doesn’t speed it up much. Best case we save a week, worst case we save a day or two.

I can say with 100% certainty that I would completely understand and not expect special treatment if I messed up and didn't get my application in. Its a lottery for hunting, not life and death as some people make it appear. If those people that waited until the last minute, messed up and didn't get it in would not have their problem "fixed" I would be willing to bet they wouldn't wait until the last minute the following year

Neither option in the poll.

If April is the earliest then mid April to the last Friday. Otherwise earlier in the year. But our state is slow on harvest stats and survey's so I won't hold my breath.

I know there are gonna be a lot of ideas, if I could pick results by January or February, I’d be all over that, but I don’t see that happening.  Hard to explain how these dates came up, but not sure WDFW will be open to any earlier than May do to the regs at least being on line. And it has to start on a weekday so employees are at work, otherwise I’d say May 1-15.

The rule making process takes until around the 10th of April for public comments, revisions, commission meetings, revisions and the final draft goes in front of the commission in April. After that regs get printed and permit applications can start.
