Northern Idaho White Tail Report
« on: October 30, 2022, 04:28:42 PM »
Bucks are starting to cruise and chase does. Buck I killed had a swollen neck. Not many folks out yet. Very few elk camps left and very few people hunting white tail. I wonder if the PotlatchDeltic road closures scared people off  :chuckle:.

Nice buck, thanks for info. My dad and friends are headed out in the morning. Wish I could've made it but not in the cards this year

As far as deer numbers go, I’ve been in 2 units 80% of the total days since the first week of May (I live in the woods from May-Mid October). Seeing a lot of white tail does with twins and a few triplets running around. Lots and lots of young bucks 3 points or less. Seen about a dozen bucks that in my opinion would be shoulder mount worthy.

I haven’t had the chance to spend many days in the blue tongue outbreak areas outside of small mouth fishing this summer or making Costco runs and overall haven’t seen many deer where the blue tongue hit the hardest. I was only up the Lochsa once this summer and don’t have a report on that. I know one farmer that found 19 buck deadheads on his property since last year.

I have one decent young buck on camera, a 4x4, not very thick antlers, a doe with twins and a doe on her own.  That is the five deer I have seen on my property the past 4 weeks.  The buck is not showing any interest in the does as of yet.  Numbers in my area are still down pretty significantly from 2 years ago.  I've not seen any of the smaller bucks yet.

Bucks are chasing and folks I know are having success rattling bucks in. Was darn near ran over by a buck chasing a doe across the road on my evening walk.

Headed a little bit north for the next few days this week and next week for work so we will see how the rut action is up there.

Went out yesterday. Saw total of five does, pretty active during daylight hours. I think the cold is getting them moving! Still hoping for some buck movement.

Went out today wood cutting and saw 5 whitetail doe and a mulely doe, mulely had a 2 pt on her trail nose down. Saw a nice 150 WT in back of someone’s truck. Yesterday we saw two nice 4 or 5s chasing but they were on private. The cold is definitely helping.
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

A lot of good bucks have been hitting the ground in the last 5 days. Bumped 3 rutting mature bucks this week while painting boundaries.

Heading up to Unit 1 today for a weekend hunt. Trying to seal the deal on a solid buck. Sounds like they are on their feet cruising. Thanks guys for the reports.

Follow up:  killed this buck. Quickest hunt ever for me and easiest drag. Good luck tag holders!!

Solid action today. Starting to see more mature bucks in addition to does and young bucks. Almost sealed the deal today. Back out tomorrow.

My son and I sure had fun during our Panhandle hunt. i think we hunt a little farther north than most of you but here are a couple of pics. My sons buck was digging a scrape when he shot him and mine was definitely looking for does. Pretty cold this year…

Great deer, Jimmy33.

Karl, good luck to you!  At least where I am hunting (Idaho Palouse region), it seems like the real action only just got going.

Not to jack the thread... but thought you fellow whitetail aficionados would enjoy a few pics from my hunting time last couple days.
Pic #1:  Typical view of a north Idaho whitetail- rare to get a complete deer in view...  :chuckle:
Pic #2:  A friendly bull elk dropped by one of my ground sits to say hello.  I think I actually rattled him in.

Pic #3:  A rare and elusive north Idaho black panther...
Pic #4:  Interesting young buck- a "spike with eye guards".  One of the several young deer I let get older.

Pic #5:  A little 4x4 who I thought needed another year.  My forestry mentor (the landowner) took a shot at him a day later... and missed clean.  The Good Lord was looking out for this little guy.
Pic #6:  A northern flying squirrel peeking out from a cavity in a living western redcedar with a heart rot column.  The family on whose land I hunt keeps a good number of snags, defective trees, and down woody debris for critters like this, even while producing a good amount of timber.  We also under-burn the ponderosa and Douglas-fir stands on the dry ridges to improve deer and elk habitat and reduce the prospects of large, severe fires.

That's all for now... good luck to all of you!  And Happy Thanksgiving.

Today, I did not see the movement of the last couple days, but then again, I ended my day a bit early.  I think the deer moved a lot during the snowstorm last night, as shown by an impressive amount of criss-crossing tracks across the landscape.  I got into a tree stand in a cedar grove at 10:40 AM, and this nice 2.5 year old buck came by at 11:00 AM.  He was cruising and neck stretching, testing the breeze for any scent of a doe.  It was my last full day to hunt, so I went ahead and brought him home.

Haha!  Indeed.  I put that sprig of Douglas-fir in his mouth- old European hunting tradition of "The Last Bite" to honor the animal.
