My first bear encounter today
« on: October 30, 2022, 09:20:08 PM »
I'm headed home and I come across a huge clear cut I've never seen before so I decide to stop and sit on it a while just to see if there's any signs of life around. Then I remember that I just bought a lil bleat can so I decide to play with it. That gets boring and I'm about to take off  so just before I'm ready to leave I decide to see if it will gain any attention if I bleet over and over Non-Stop. I can tell you yes it does. At that point it apparently starts working as a predator or distress call. Because it gained the attention of a bear and brought him in at about 10 miles an hour crashing through the brush before I could figure out  what direction it was coming from he was about 10 yd from me, that'll get the heart pumping! And that is exactly why I've never used a distress call  :chuckle: sadly by the time I figured out what it was and where it was at and we locked eyes by the time I grab my gun he vanished into the brush like a ghost  :bash: I spent 10 years on here reading your guy's stories about bears crashing in at a high speed with distress calls and I've always purposely hoped to not experience that  :chuckle:

Sounds a bit exhilarating!  I'm glad to hear it worked for you.  I was archery hunting earlier this year and the area I was in had a good bit of bear sign.  I debated giving the distress call a few tries.  I sat there and debated it a bit and decided maybe the pointy stick wasn't the best close quarters moving target weapon system. Decided to hold off until I at least had a boom stick in hand.  Glad you got to see a bear at least!

I think with everything going on with less ungulates and more predators. It’s nice to know different ways to call in predators. I just ordered the ultimate guide to black bear hunting. I know the seasons basically over but I want to do my part. Thanks for the report.

I know more than one guy who has had bear respond to fawn and cow/calf calls and no amount of arm waving and yelling stopped the bear.  It can happen so fast you must be prepared.

Little Pathfinder had a similar significant emotional event with a predator call and his bear this August.  It tried coming up into the tree with him.  Died at the foot of the ladder.  :yike: Mamma doesn't get to hear that story for a few years... :chuckle:
