Dayton unit camping??? Daughter drew antlerless tag.
« on: October 31, 2022, 09:19:19 AM »
Twelve year old daughter drew a dayton whitetail antlerless tag.  Planning to the 10th-13th probably but is there any decent places to camp in the unit?

Looked myself awhile ago... after the state park closes the pickings are pretty slim. NF can snow in pretty quick this time of year!

Stayed at the blue mountain hotel a couple times. It’s what it is… a dry place to stay haha.

There is a best western in town also.  You could camp down in tucannon but you won’t be in the Dayton unit you would have to drive up to it everyday.

Pioneer park off Skyline Dr is a pretty good camp spot.  Not sure which area of you unit you will be hunting though.  Shoot me a PM if you have any questions

If you are staying low in the fields, then Pioneer is a good choice. Its actually a cemetery, but I've not seen graves. During the general opener its overflowing. This late, it likely has very few campers. The land is owned by a trust and the trustee is in MT, last I checked. On Skyline where Malcolm Grade connects. There is a good sized piece of Feel Free to Hunt land across the road and then down Malcolm Grade.

Mountains have lots of snow and calling for a lot this week. Possible snow in town also. Keep an eye on the weather as hotel might be best bet for a happy kid.

It is more expensive than the motels in town, but the Best Western is very hunter friendly.

Had this buck at 225 yards for about 15 minutes this morning.  Seen a few does but they'll all on the move.
