Taneum cow tag
« on: October 31, 2022, 10:40:54 AM »
I’m trying to help a buddy fill a cow tag in the Taneum area GMU 336. Been out daily since opening for bulls and have yet to see any reasonably new sign, let alone any elk. It’s a long East to West unit and we’ve looked at most of what is publicly accessible. We would appreciate any insight or recommendations for the area as neither of us have taken an elk. In Washington, drawing a cow tag may be our only reasonable option (this is supported by WFDW harvest statistics). We would like to make the most out of this draw tag. We will reciprocate any information that may be helpful to those willing to help us out.
Thanks!

Check area behind Nature Conservancy Gates either Taneum or Woods and Steele to west Lookout Mountain, Windy Pass, Little Creek area. Walk in closed roads glass

Plenty of elk in the unit and lots of places to find them.  Don't get stuck in one location keep moving until you find elk.

I saw more elk in there this year than I have the previous 3 or 4. I also saw more road hunters than ever.  I couldn't find any spikes so I came home for tag soup but there were certainly elk in there this year. Just takes some walking around to find them.

Tons of elk in there in all the normal spots.
Also becoming apparent the bull to cow ratio needs to be addressed. Dumb bulls kept messing up our stalks on cows. One mature bull for every five cows is a little much  :chuckle:

This unit will suck the life out of an impatient hunter.  It can take years to become familiar with how to hunt it....outside of the rut.  During the rut, you can just run to the bugle and find elk.  It is thick, steep country with limited road access in quite a bit of it.....not for the faint of heart.  If you stick to the roads, you will be with the other 99% of the hunters.  Most successful hunters are either lucky....or they have a good knowledge of where the elk are and how to hunt them.

Hope the OP find the cow they were looking for.

Congrats to the kid. I also had the cow tag. I've been hunting this unit for 20 years an bulls an big mules bucks was all I could find this trip. Lots of cat tracks down low this year in the snow. Elk were acting wierd. Maybe next year.
