Spotters over 60 zoom
« on: November 04, 2022, 05:34:41 PM »
I’m heavily considering getting a quality spotter (buy once cry once kind) for those of you that have experience with them what’s your take. Ive looked at the Swaro’s and zeiss. Any other companies I’m maybe missing? A lot of the areas I’m glassing is 1-2 miles so the extra zoom will help a lot

Vortex razor line very good glass and some people cannot tell the difference between them and the really high end optics but then some people can and they will pay the difference
Do yourself a favor and look thru both don’t forget leupold gold ring models  as well

I have a swaro 20-60x65 spotter and rarely do I ever zoom much further than 35ish.  If I had to do it over again I would get the wide angle zoom 25-50 I think it is.  I am usually glassing in the 400-800 yard range.

Kowa has a 30x-70x eyepiece.

Agree with Crunchy though. Are you trying to actively glass at 60x or just get a better look at something after spotting at a lower power?

There is a reason vortex is 1/3 of the price of Swaro, Leica, ZEISS….

I’m constantly needing more. I’m spotting at 1300+ the 70 will help with the distance

More than likely you won’t be able to effectively use all 60x of zoom.

I agree that unless you spend top dollar for the biggest objective you can get, actually, not even then, the 60 will be pretty compromised.
Every high powered optic I have looked through gets ‘iffy’ on details and brightness, the higher power you go to. Back it off some and it actually better on detail.
If possible, go try some. Store, someone that has one, and see what you think.
Trying a set of Swarovski binocs sure ruined me for Leupold Gold Rings. Leupold’s are pretty nice. Swarovski’s are WONDERFUL.
Cuterebra are NOT cute!

Exit pupils get pretty small at magnifications over 60x. Even with a 100mm objective the exit pupil at 60x is only 1.6mm. That's a pretty small beam which means limited light transmission and the need to be perfectly centered behind the eyepiece. Add in heat mirage and the need to keep the optic perfectly still and it's a real challenge. I'd be looking at Swarovski's 115mm objective module if you really want magnification that high. :twocents:
Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.

If you're not willing to drop the $$$$ on Swaro, do yourself a favor by not looking through them. Once you do, thar will be all you want.

I sat side by side with a Swaro 20-60 x80, 20-65 Vortex razor,  and a Vangaurd 15-45x65 a few weeks ago while looking for a spotter to purchase.   The step up in view is noticeable for each step up in glass, but the comfort on they eye is almost more noticeable to me.  Eye fatigue gets to a person pretty quickly with cheap glass.  Swaros feel like awe, home.  Vortex is like a paper cut annoyance after a bit,  and the Vangaurd was more uncomfortable.

I ended up with a Kowa 883 with the TZ11 wide angle eye piece.  It feels like home too.  They are highly rated,  and I have never heard them compared to as inferior to Swaros.  Kowa is worth checking out.

Mirage will effect your ability to glass long range before your spotters magnification usually.
