Older Federal 210 Primers
« on: January 24, 2023, 06:59:33 AM »
I bought some Fed 210 primers approx 15 years ago. I thought they were old then. But, for .73c, why not. I load CCI 200 primers for our standard cartridges. Anyone use the Fed 210 as a direct replacement? I know shot shell 209 primers can vary your load some, will there be much of a variation between the CCI 200 & Fed 210? Looking at the package, I'm guessing these Federals are 80s vintage? I haven't tried any, no Idea if they will even go bang. They have been stored correctly since I got them off the store shelf. Thanks in advance.

I was given a bunch of primers a couple of years ago that were from the 70s. So far, everything I loaded with them went bang. As for variation between CCI and Federal, I don't know.

I have swapped primers while building loads to see the difference primers have on load performance.  I have no scientific process, but I do chrono my rounds and what I have found is....primers don't impact velocities that much...maybe 5-10 fps max.  I have however noticed certain primers will lower an ES / SD and assist with tightening up groups.  This is assuming your switching LR for LR  not LR for LRM.

The only way to really know how they will effect your load is to try them, but I suspect they won't have a huge impact and may even help.  Can't hurt to try them.

I got all my fathers stuff when he passed away.  In there I found a box (1000) of CCI primers that were in the little black tray with the white and green boxes, the primers were laid on their side.  If I remember right these were from the 1960’s.  I thought well why not I used them, after inspecting them for anything wrong, corrosion, swelling or anything that did not look right.  Reloaded a bunch of 30-30 cast for plinking.  Not one misfire in 300 rounds!  Just inspect them, those that don’t look right don’t use.
