Muley Crazy
« on: May 22, 2009, 04:55:05 PM »
OK, so I am healing up from hernia surgery, and just before I go under the knife I swing by the bookstore and look for some good reading material.  I see a copy of Muley Crazy, so I grab it.  I have read it once before, and it wasn't too bad.  This issue is their annual "Mexico-Sonora" issue.
Now, don't get me wrong.  If I had the $$, I would love to go down to Sonora and chase those big muleys.  But good lord, why do they dedicate an entire issue to it?  I know they're big bucks, but every story is almost identical.
1.  I flew into Hermosillo
2.  I got into a pickup with a big rack and a seat and a guide
3.  We drove until one of us saw a monster buck
4.  I "stalked" him
5.  I shot the biggest buck of my life

Am I being cynical here?  Am I off base?

Like I said, I would love to do it sometime, but to dedicate an entire magazine issue to 20 versions of the same story seemed a little much.

I 100% agree. This is the kind of crap that will ruin hunting. I will never fault someone for making a living but I dont have to like it.

I don't care for storys like that, the buck was a pig though!!!

Just buy the govenors tag for 70,000 from Arizona, then hire team mossback or Ryan to guide you.  They'll watch him all summer for you and know what watertank to shoot him off of during the fall drought.   ;)  Then one of those is yours.

I am jealous I don't get to spend much time in the Kiabab.

generally speaking where I hunt and how I hunt there isn't a team of guys following me around.  I tend to kill withthe first shot, and I tend to find my animals on my own.  I've been in the woods when the USO guys were after a 400 inch bull down in NM, hanging their 100 trailcams out trying to find him, and I've been photographing in the Methow when the teams of guys were out scoiuring the hillside with their radios for the tag holder.  Generally speaking, I'm not too impressed.  Other than that, I'd say I am the typical armchair enthusiast that reads alot of the stories.  You know the ones, fly in, shoot a trophy and then fly out, all while its being videotaped as if its a record class type hunt. The best ones are the ones in peoples yards and it takes a great photographer to make sure the subdiviosion isn't in the background.  Mostly I am referring to the Arizona hunt this last year, not the Wenatchee hunt.   Lots of whispering going on, the shot is taken, he walks up and pokes the animal with a stick while the camera man has already been there 10 minutes setting up, because the camera man is probably in the best shape of the bunch and is probably the stealthiest, and is probably cussing under his breath as the guy shoots for the 4th time to put the animal down.   I think I mentioned in the Eastmans journal how I really felt about these tags.   I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule, and there are a couple guys out there that utilize them to their fullest, but I do believe they are exceptions.

Regarding Gov's tags, I think if you have the coin to bid on and win a great tag, then go out there and do the work for the animal yourself, then there's nothing wrong with it.  Unfortunately, I don't think this is what usually happens.  Generally, it seems to go the way Bone described it, or some variation thereof.
I generally agree with what you said in the last Eastman's Bone.

Your perception on how these hunts go are great bone, but they are not always correct as you stated.  Hatch and his buddies spend many hours in the woods, probably more than you and I.  It is his job and he is getting criticized for doing it.  He loves all animals and wild places just as much as you and me.  I also hunt without a team of guys and quite often am found miles from the nearsest road.  I also find my animals on my own.  I have not always been as fortunate as you killing with your first shot though,  as I'm sure many others have not either.  I also consider myself a better than average shot too.  Things can happen and and do happen to everybody!  I have killed many suburban blacktails,  is that not hunting?  Sometimes you have to go to where the game is at.  You would not catch me on soap lake fishing.  So to wrap this up,  I do like a lot of your comments and views on a lot of things but you come on a little too strong and knowledgeable on a lot of stuff that you have not been involved in.  You are a celebrity on here and a lot of guys listen to you due to that fact.  I will continue to read muley crazy and other magazines like wise because it is hunting.  Not everyone hunts the same and in the end we are all on the same page.  Not to mention when the anti's start their *censored* these guys are the first to let us know and the guys who buy the governors tags have the money to fight them.

All is well BC.  Its just an opinion and everyone is welcomed to theirs.  I bought the magazine immediately when I first saw it because the animals were incredible.  I soon grew tired of the content.  There are some amazing deer running around down there.   If I am jealous of anything, it is the time that Ryan gets to spend out there and where he gets to spend it.  I'm definitely envious anyhow.  I appreciate the money that those tags raise for wildlife.  The type of hunts as they come off often leave a bad taste in my mouth.  I wonder what it does to other non hunters and is the damage done worth it.  I won't ever know the answer to that.  I will stand by my opinion of it as stated in Eastmans.  I would suppose if these guys were really that supportive of hunting and the animals they would use their dollars anyhow.  I know a lot of guys give without expecting anything from it.

Feels like I just got sand thrown in my face.  All I sad is that I liked the pics and this is how this thread is going to be.  I love to hunt and I personally love to hunt when no one else can (gov tags/special permit).  I will never be able to afford a gov tag but it does not mean I can not be apart of one.  I take great enjoyment helping other people with a tag wether it is a gov tag or a special permit.  When someone else kills a monster whatever and they work to get it I am stoked.  Everybody has there own views on this and as long as there are gov tags and special permits I will work my ass off (FOR FREE) so that that person or myself kills the best trophy they can because you might only have one chance at OIL.

Actually there was a compliment in there for you.  I said the vidoegrapher was probably in the best shape, stealthiest and in the know of the whole bunch and cussing the .....under your breath.  :)

by the way our whole conversation wasn't specific at you at all.  Sorry if you got that feeling.  More of an overall view of how I feel about gov tags and that magazine, which is basically the same way you feel.  Who doesn't like looking at unreal bucks.   There are exceptions and you'd know way more about them than I would in regards to actual tag holders.  Apparantly BC has also been on some Gov tag hunts and knows better as well.

No hard feelings bone.  I infact have not been involved in a governors tag hunt but as you know I have several friends who have here in WA as well as AZ.  As far as your concern on how the general public views hunting, I highly doubt that 99% of them know there are such things as governors tags.  Its funny this came up because when I was flying back from Mexico a month ago I was sitting next to a very well kept older lady.  I will not mention her name but she does own several large estates her in the US as well as other countries.  Anyway we got on the topic of hunting and she blew me away.  She said she has never hunted and never will but understands the need for it to keep the herds healthy.  She also said she used to donate to peta, sierra club and the humane society but when she realized how wacko these people are she stopped.  She stated that they do more harm than good and that hunters are infact bigger conservationists than these twits.  She has a huge pad in Scotland with a bunch of reds and pheasants on it and was not so kind to let me come over and do a little thinning of the herds. :bash:  I think the only time that the nonhunting public hears about hunting is when an accident occurs or one of these wacko organizations has a demonstration on it.  When I meet new people I always bring up that I hunt and most are very interested on the topic and I tell them the truth about hunters and the need for hunting.  And most of them agree.  It is guys like you and I bone and all others on this site that need to educate the general public on the issue.  Hell my mother inlaw was a huge antihunter but when she listen to me and realized the things that hunters actually do for the greater good of the animals she saw the light, in fact she subscribes to Hunt'in Fool for me.  She still has trouble going into my trophy room! :chuckle:  We as hunters need to stick together no matter what.  If I get the chance to stop by Hatches shop on my way to AZ this year Im going to get a T-shirt signed for ya by him bone!  I will need your shirt size. :chuckle:
