Replacement Reeds for Duck Calls
« on: November 21, 2022, 05:30:42 PM »
Been experimenting with the length of the reed on my Phelps call and cut it too short. Where do y’all buy new reeds and are they somewhat universal between single reed calls? I have a JJ Lares as well that I’d like to experiment with different reed lengths on.

Also open to recommendations on a good wood call, family needs suggestions for Christmas!

You can buy the mylar at a hobby shop or wal mart. If you send me your address in a pm, I can send you a small amount. I make calls.Mike

Once you find the right gauge of mylar try changing the width instead of length.

You can go to most of the popular call makers websites and most of them sell complete tuning kits, or atleast sell reds and corks. I know RNT, Bill Saunders and Born and Raised call company to name a few offer tuning supplies.

Thanks callturner, I'll send a PM.

So on Mack's website I see a lot of different options. Any suggestions on where to start? I'm thinking this pack https://www.mackspw.com/J.J.-LARES-T1-REED?quantity=1&custcol_macks_calls_attributes=12

That doesn't appear to provide different thickness options though.

Awesome, thanks Jason. Email sent. That PD-1 has been my go-to next to the JJ.

which JJ lares call do you run? I run the T-1 with a 1.355 reed. i've ran that set up for 5 years now and love it. looks like macks is pretty picked over for there custom cut lares reeds. If you go to Upper duck . com they will have a better selection, or call Brett a Lares co and he will get you set up.

It's a Hybrid, the one linked below to be exact. I like the tone on it and will probably not mess with the stock reed but figure it might be fun to experiment a bit. Well, more fun for me than my neighbors :chuckle:

The Phelps PD-1 is the reed I really messed up. Sounds like a horse stepped on a duck more than anything.

Thats the nice about the lares calls is they have all those custom reeds to try and see what fits you best. The shorter the reed the less air and higher pitched it will be, longer reed will be harder to blow and deeper.  do the same with your phelps get a bunch of reeds and just start cutting little bits a time  until you get dialed for you.

@JPhelps can't say enough about your C/S department. Chris responded within a couple hours and I just received a tracking number. Top notch stuff, thanks again!
