Jump Shooting

Growing up, this was one of my favorite forms of duck hunting.  No dog, and three old decoys to my name. I still have those hard plastic babies.   THis was the most efficient form of hunting for me.

I loved jump shooting too when I was a kid.  When the ponds were frozen over it was so fun to plan a stalk and just pop over the edge of a creek running through the valley.  I got to know all the spots where the water was open.  One time I remember I got a quadruple, I shot 3 birds in the air with the three in the gun and I had a shell in my mouth, loaded it in the shotgun and dropped another drake.

THats a fun memory.   The kid that introduced me to duck hunting used a single shot 20.  He always had a shell or two in his mouth.

I shot them from a blind too when I was a kid but jump shooting was so much more fun. 

What was even better is when you were sneaking up to the drain and a bonus rooster would pop out on the stalk, I can remember it happening twice, I always took the rooster first.

Fond memories jump shooting as a young man! In high school we’d drive the river road from Kettle Falls up to Northport and back spotting ducks and geese from the road. It didn’t take us long to learn that you had to keep going at least 1/2 mile past the birds before slowing down, even if they couldn’t see us they’d hear the truck slowing down and get out of dodge. We’d sneak back along the road and then belly crawl through what ever sort of cover we could find between us and the birds. On the count of 3 a bunch of 16 year olds would let the steel shot fly out of a bunch of hand me down shotguns, and occasionally, we even killed one! On the rare occasion that a bird was slow enough for us to kill, that’s when the fishing poles came out. Standing on the bank casting towards the dead bird with whatever giant treble hook contraption we could find in our old man’s tacklebox. Ah to be young!
Thanks for bringing back old memories, I haven’t thought about those jump shooting trips in many moons.

This was the only way I hunted ducks as well. Out in the scab rock crawling from waterhole to waterhole with our uncle. Some days we slayed ducks! It was a blast! I decided I didn't care to eat much duck so I quit hunting them years ago.

First duck was a drake with a bolt 410 jump shooting channeled scab land ponds, thanks for the reminder!!!
