First bottom fishing trip

A friend of mine and myself are planning to take his boat out near the jetty in Ocean shores Tuesday and try our hand for some bottom fish. I've never done this before can anyone tell me a good setup and bait for this type of fishing?

go buy some lead head jigs in 2 oz and 3 oz with some rubber worms white and black and green work well keep switching colors until you find the one they want to eat better buy several because you will get hung up on the rocks and lose them good luck

The end of the Jetty and around the ocean side are the best if the weather holds for you. Last time I went out there I was in a 16' Sea Dory, it wasn't big enough to do either. We motor mooched up and down the inside of the jetty with one guy on the motor at all times the other two fishing, we stayed about 25 yards off of the rocks, pretty nerve racking. We did good with a herring and 6-10oz of lead and a shrimp fly up about 3 feet. The same thing you use when you go out on the charter boats. The black bass where nice sized the ling where to small.

Teacherman is refering to the south Jetty by Westport.  Reall be careful there.  I think that I prefere Neah Bay for bottom fishing from smaller craft.  if you would like some idea's where and how there. I can put you into fish.

I fish there all the time for bottum fish. Watch the tides, and the wind. From the tip on the bar side come down about 60 yards and you will have a huge rock that you will see at low tide, (There might be a crab pot float sill out there also). Come down the jetty about 150 to 200 yards and you will come up on a shelf( again you can see this at low tide.) fish just to the edge of this.(oh yeah, fish from the tip of the jetty down to the self). If the water is too choppy for you, go to the fog horn, and fish from there up to where you feel comfortable. Drifting os the best way to fish that area..

As far as gear, I just use a regular salmon mooching rig, 3 to 4oz. weight, with a cut plug hearring. I have used this set up for about 40 years, and have worked the best for me. I've nailed some nice lings( the biggest being a 45 pound green ling right off the fog horn) and a butt load of see abass.

Don't forget you crab pot..

By the way,, I fish this spot in a 15' Baycraft..
