What duck is this?
« on: December 03, 2022, 09:28:17 PM »
A buddy shot this today, only bird. I was not there. Someone told him it was a lucystic mallard. But I don't know, it looks more like a hybrid to me, pintail/mallard or mallard/gadwall  :dunno: North Sound, what do you think?

Looks like it was crossed with a pheasant!

Brown meat duck. I've noticed a lot of variation in the hen mallards this season on the coast. Shade, size, bill pattern, and speculum. Had one in the early season with one blue leg.

Not a leucistic mallard IMO. It's a Welsh Harlequin crossed with a wild Mallard most likely. Looks just like the ones I have in my back yard penned up for the winter. When they cross with a regular Mallard their beak gets that mottled black coloration. Otherwise Welsh Harlequin hens have a dark green bill. The drake's look very similar to mallards with a lighter body too, depending on the time of year it is.
