Mobile welder needed in Central WA
« on: December 06, 2022, 08:08:48 AM »
I’m looking for a welder around the cle elum, Ellensburg, Yakima area willing to come to me. I have a hydraulic cylinder on a cardboard bailer that is seeping fluid at the weld on top of the mast. I was hoping we could drain it and re weld the top cap with the cylinder still in place. If It needs to be removed and welded we can’t afford to have it down much more than 4-8 hours. Let me know if you can do this or know someone who can. Feel free to PM me if you think you might but need more details.
Thanks

I've had a real hard time finding anyone who would weld on a hydraulic cylinder mobiliy. maybe they're a little less timid over by you but everyone on the westside I talked to wanted to take the cylinder back to the shop, pull the piston, so the welds and then put in a new seal kit. Hope you have better luck than me.

What the general pushback is because when you weld on the cylinder it distorts the barrel and potentially causing more damage as the rod moves in and out and the clearance is not there anymore for the piston and valves. In the shop the barrel is honed after the welds have been applied.

That said, We do weld on our cylinders on the machines knowing that we will have to pull it apart at a later date and do it right, it buys us some time and sometimes there’s only enough time for a bandaid. You have to make sure the fluid level is below the weld line and make sure the packing and valves are also below the the weld line. The crack will come back with the bandaid fix, it’s just a matter of time.

It is really hard to chase a crack out of a hydraulic cylinder without a bunch of cleaning and grinding.

Thanks for all the leads and the info as well. Definitely a lot more to it than just a basic weld on a trailer or something. I’m going to reach out to the three suggested tomorrow and see what their timeline would be to just take it off and do it right. If it’s going to be too long hopefully one of them will just do their best with it in place for now. Also might be picking up a used compactor from a member on here. Not quite sure if it’s what I want yet but might work to get me by if the fix on the main one is going to take longer.

Look at a place like this and just replace the whole thing

https://www.surpluscenter.com/Hydraulics/Hydraulic-Cylinders/Double-Acting-Hydraulic-Cylinders/?page_no=8

We ended up just getting a new ORM cylinder on our last broken one. Was quicker and not all that much more expensive, but by the time you figure pulling the cylinder, running it to a shop, lettinf them have it for a day or two and then the time to get it back onsite and reinstalled, the hour it took us to beat out pins and reconnect hoses was actually cheaper too.
