Zeiss v4 4-16 questions

For those who own one or have had experience with one specifically the updated version with exposed locking windage dial.

1. Has it held zero, tracked accurately, and been durable
2. 50mm or 44mm
3. How's the eye relief and eye box throughout the mag range
4. What reticle did you go with

I bought one last year to try based on reviews of other members.  I went with the 44mm objective lens and z plex reticle.  I was putting in on a  youth rifle and wanted small, lightweight, and a simple reticle.  It is not a rifle I will be shooting to 1000 yards so figured.....KISS rule applied. 

As for the turrets....I have only owned it for about 8 months and put maybe 100 yards down range.  It appears to track very well out to 500 yards and then back to 100.  The eye relief is very nice and comparable to any leupold I have ever shot.  The price is right for a mid range scope.  The turret clicks are positive and easy to dial......not quite as positive as other higher end scopes I have shot, but still very nice. 

All in all....would I buy it again??  Yes

Would I recommend it to a friend??  Yes

Will I switch all my scopes to this model....No, but for the application I'm using it for, it is pretty awesome.

Can't speak for the 4-16 but I'm not all that impressed with the optics on my 6-24. I bought it to replace a VX6 that I had lost confidence in, so far it seems to function and track well but I cannot for the life of me get a good focused image of the target and reticle at the same time. First Zeiss product I've ever had a complaint with, I have older conquests that IMO have much clearer optics. In that aspect the old non-HD vx6 blows it out of the water.

Thanks for the insight. I'm looking for a sub 30 oz, tough, reliable, forgiving scope to go on a 7mm rem mag project I have in the works. I'd like to keep the bottom end magnification no higher then 4-5x and would take as much magnification on the high end as I can get without blowing over my weight cap.

1. I've only had mine for one season. Have sent maybe 50 rounds down range with it. It has tracked accurately out to 20 MOA and in between and held zero so far. If you look on Rokslide, there's a guy username Formidilosus that drop tests scopes for durability. The Zeiss V4 does not pass his test there, though it does typically pass tracking tests. I believe NF, Trijicon, and SWFA are the scopes that typically do pass both his tracking and drop tests.
 
2. I have the 44mm. No experience in low light conditions with it.

3. I'm happy with the eye relief at different magnifications, but don't have a ton of experience with other scopes.

4. I have the ZMOAi-T30 illuminated reticle. It is awesome, big fan.

Buddy liked it so much on my gun he bought one too. You can typically get a demo from Redhawk for a discount. They have a very good reputation and the used/demo optics honestly look brand new, include all the original packaging, etc.

If these are you requirements and your putting it on a 7mm mag.....I would look very hard at he NF NX8 2-20x50 that weighs in at 28oz.   You won't find a tougher, more reliable scope than the NF (in my opinion).  I run the 4-32x50 and I believe it comes in at 29oz....which would also be a great option.

No issues whatsoever.  I would take the nc8 over the zeiss any day of the week of money was not a factor.

I had the 6-24 and loved it the first year i used it. Then found out the hard way when I  lost zero and no idea how when I missed the biggest buck of my life at 150 yds 4 times. I had the zero stop set and i had to loosen that to get zero again  I ripped that scope off and went nightforce and never looked back.

I don't understand?  Zero stop is a must and should not have messed you up unless it was not set appropriately.  My NX8 also has a zero stop and I wouldn't buy a scope with turrets that didn't.

Well any time you adjust zero on the y-axis with a V4 you should be resetting the zero stop, right?

No, unless I'm not understanding what your talking about.  Like any zero stop you have to do a few things.....

1.  sight in your rifle for Zero range...usually 100 yards but some like to do 200 yards.
2.  set your zero stop to that zero
3.  set your turret back to "0" which should be at the hard stop. 

Once you do the above steps....they only time you ever have to change / set your zero stop again is if you have to re-sight in your rifle.  If you dial to say....300 yards, then you want to come back to your zero stop / zero range....you dial back till it hits the hard stop.

I don't understand?  Zero stop is a must and should not have messed you up unless it was not set appropriately.  My NX8 also has a zero stop and I wouldn't buy a scope with turrets that didn't.

Maybe my post was confusing lol zero stop was set 100yd zero, i shot a deer a week before here in washington and it was dead on. After I missed the buck in idaho I came home and went to the range and it was off 6". I never fell, gun wasn't dropped. I have no idea what happened but i wasn't happy with it. Scopes shouldn't just lose zero

Right, not talking about dialing back and forth. If he missed a buck because the scope was not properly sighted in and you have to adjust the elevation turret to get the scope zeroed, you have to adjust the zero stop...otherwise, it wouldn't stop at zero! I don't imagine anyone wants to dial backwards...though I have heard of people zeroing at 300yds.

Maybe using "zeroed" interchangeably with "sighted in" is confusing.

deerhunter - yeah I think we we're confused cause you seemed frustrated with having to remove the zero stop bucket to re-zero the rifle. Not just because the scope lost zero.
