Help finishing shoulder elk mount.
« on: December 09, 2022, 02:45:16 PM »
So in 2019 I took my elk to have a shoulder mount done. Was a coworker of friend of a friend that does it on the side type of deal. Won't do that again. His full time job got busy, and his personal life took a dump on him. Then he dropped off the face of the planet for a year and a half, at least from my perspective.
Anyway, I have my skull cap/antlers and the hide back. The hide is fully tanned by a tannery he shipped it out to, it looks great as far as I'm concerned, but I don't have a taxidermist experience or eye. I can get some pictures put up later of the hide.
Trying to figure out how to get it finished.
Contacted my first choice, but they said they can't take any more work at the moment and are leary to take on other taxidermist 's unfinished work as it can potentially be more work than doing it from scratch. Which I understand.
So I got ahold of the guy that did my 2020 deer. He said "maybe...maybe not" will have to see it in person. Unfortunately it's quite a drive, so that'll have to wait. Anyone, specifically any taxis that can chime in with advice or anything?
Is Charlie's Taxidermy still a thing?
Found a pic on google of a mount he did that is EXACTLY what I want. Tried tracking him down, no luck yet.
Thanks ya'll

That the exact same one I wanted for my Dayton bull. Today I regret settling for something else!

Try Joel at Black River Taxidermy. Hes a sponsor on here and does impressive work. Best of luck to you!

Try Frank Specht Taxidermy in Kelso.  You could drive up there and chat.  Nice guy, works in his shop all the time and got my animals done typically in under 6 mo.

Here are some pictures of how it sits at the moment. The chest through neck was skinned like peeling off a tube sock. I had the whole hide intact so I had the whole thing tanned so that I could use the back half to lay over a chair or stretch on the wall somewhere.

Well, you have enough hide that's for sure.  I'd make the drive east or even into idaho, west side guys are just too expensive, unrealistically expensive any more.  Dark timber taxi in colville and wildlife creations in Hayden Idaho are two I'd call.  I can get my wifes moose shoulder mounted at dark timber for 1,500, an elk shoulder mount is 1,095 there.
“In common with”..... not so much!!

Glad I got my WY buck when I did.  He does nice work.

Its a drive from where you are at but I would bet that Over the hill taxidermy in Clear lake (skagit County) would help you out.  Another option is Critters taxidermy in Gig harbor.

I had my grandpa's deer antlers put on a mount by over the hill and he did an awesome job recreating it for me and the price was low compared to most.

Critters mounted my first pronghorn, it took 14 months but it turned out incredible.  Good luck
